“overrun”… seems a bit of a loaded term there, no? It’s pretty clear that Vuvic is a right wing, Putin-aligned kind of politician, no?

Now, we also pay provincial tax (at least in Ontario), which isn’t included here, but yeah, in terms of what we pay in taxes, it’s no where near the amount that Americans think, or are told, that we pay.

Most US states also have state tax, which is the equivalent. And then there’s sales tax, etc.

(1) How so?

(2) Bear in mind that most stories in DW’s English edition are either written in somebody’s second (or third) language or are translations of stories originally written in another language. If it’s a translation there’s a little notice at the bottom. And the while the translations are made by competent staff, their first language isn’t necessarily English either. There’s a fair bit of, usually quite subtle, “lost in translation” stuff going on.

Yeah, we have sales tax too, so it’s probably about even in the end, and we end up with public health care and you don’t. I guess what would go to health care is going to the military in the U.S.

Maybe? A lot of it is (of course) not going to “health care,” and is going instead to various kinds of corporate profits. I’m sure USians pour more per capita into the profit-seeking “health care” industry than Canadians do.

The slogan displayed on the window behind the former president says no amnesty.

According to local newspapers, the demonstration flopped; organizers canceled several demonstrations in other cities to concentrate their efforts in Rio de Janeiro, but and following a trend, the number of Mr. Bolsonaro’s supporters has been falling steadily. Mr. Bolsonaro called on his supporters and expected thousands of people to turn out at Copacabana Beach. Authorities estimate that less than 10 percent of the people who usually cheered for the former president were willing to give up a day of rest to hear officials practically confess to crimes against democracy.

Well, actually there were less than 20,000 people there and I bet that half of them were at Copacabana Beach to enjoy the sunday.

That’s what I thought too. But it turns out that in the US, the tax money that (in Canada) would’ve gone to public health care goes into … public health care.

For real. The US spends a bit more tax money on public healthcare than Canada, Australia, etc.
