I have spoken with people who identify as Catholics who believed that the last pope was a heretic and would burn in hell, and they were members of fringe sects, like the Bony Carrot woman, so some “Catholics” likely wouldn’t care.

I don’t think even Trump could afford banning a sitting or former pope from visiting his country, citizenship or no. He’s one of the few people in the world for whom losing a citizenship would just be a formality and have no impact on his travel at all. That’s what I meant about not losing any sleep over it.

The country requires that their bishops have Peruvian citizenship, so when he was promoted to that level 10 years ago they gave him citizenship a month in advance to adhere the requirement.
