Context for the furriners: we’re in the middle of a closely fought by-election for Turnbull’s old seat of Wentworth.

Wentworth happens to include the suburbs that contain most of the upper-class portion of the Sydney Jewish community. The Liberals’ decision to backflip on the “okay to be white” vote was probably related to backlash from within that community, as is their new-found enthusiasm for moving the embassy.

The by-election is also leading to a wide assortment of desperate electoral ratfuckery; most notably, a recent anonymous email that claimed that the Liberals’ main opponent in Wentworth (Dr Kerryn Phelps, a centre-right independent) is withdrawing from the race due to HIV infection (entirely untrue).

Wentworth was a nice demonstration of the benefits of preferential voting, BTW:

In an FPP election, the Liberals would have held the seat, despite being opposed by the majority of the electorate and suffering one of the biggest swings in Australian electoral history (their vote after preferences dropped from about 65% to 45%).
