Alt-right march in Charlottesville

Well there were various groups there. I’m sure each was doing their own thing. The salutes I saw looked quite Naziesque.

Worth watching all the way through

And yet I still see so many Facebook commenters claiming “there are no Nazis” or “BLM is just as bad” or “Communists killed a lot more people than Nazis!” and other completely idiotic drivel. Maybe that’s just Trump’s self-appointed social media troll army though…

Roughly the same number of people say they’ll never stop disapproving, though it’s not like Trump’s detractors are being bombarded by his achievements.

Some percentage of the population are simply impervious to information—they’ve learned to excuse, deny or rationalize away anything that reflects poorly on “their side.” It’s not really political positions they’re defending, it’s their identities—and how do you get someone to change his/her identity?

Werd!

I celebrate the constant reminders that identity is a fiction. One needn’t try to change identity, any more that one needs to try changing one’s memories. It happens whether people want it to or not - only most apparently aren’t aware of it.

(FWIW “their identity” sounds more inclusive)

Also, encourage discussing issues where political positions/solutions count more than identities. More inclusiveness, more discourse, more direct actions. Less cult of personality, less leave-it-to-the-professionals. Authoritarianism weakens when desperate people realize that they can rely upon and help each other - without any parasitic mediators.

Whatever they are, it’s all about trying to stop a popular front forming against the far right.

I just saw more “but the alternative to white supremacy is communism!” comments on Twitter this morning. I don’t know how you even have a baseline discussion with people who honestly think being against fascism automatically makes you a communist.

About 50, in my estimation.

“Everyone who disagrees with us is a Communist” is a KKK thing.

Partially because at the time the KKK had its resurgence, Communists were the thing that almost everybody in the US could safely hate, so they could declare Jews and interracial marriage and so forth “Communist” even though it had nothing to do with anything.

And I suspect it’s partly the “cultural Marxism” idea, that social standing and power are a kind of capital and in order to treat everyone equally, that means taking status away from those who have the most (straight white Christian men), who believe they deserve it due to merit, somehow.

Yes, so weird if you watch the Vice video they keep talking about “The Commies.” Uh, it’s 2017, right? Or did I travel back to the 1950’s?

and yet they like the russians!!! it literally makes no sense.

It seems to be only the establishment Dems that (bizarrely) still associate Russia with communism. The Trumpeter fascists recognise the Putin regime as fellow travellers.

Couldn’t make it.

Are you saying you can’t hit their site?

No. I could see it, but I couldn’t make it all the way to the end as you recommended. I got as far as the bald Nazi explaining to me that black people act funny. Couldn’t watch any farther. I guess I really am a snowflake.

Yes, disturbing to watch these people up close. I think it’s important to see how they are behaving and shut them down.
