And now for some good news

I just purchased two machetes for no particular reason, one for the bedroom and one near the front door. They’re probably only for decoration.

I’m a Louisville Slugger collector, myself.

You and @awfulhorrid made me think about our trip to Santa Fe several weeks ago. One of the few distractions off the side of the freeway was this place:

Of, course, I had to go inside and take a look around. :joy:

I’ve had the traditional aluminum baseball bat in my car since the day after election day 2016. Obviously I keep forgetting that it’s in there after getting back from softball with friends. (I really should throw a ball back there too.)

I have a child size aluminum bat in our master bedroom. Want something that you can swing a bit easier in a hallway or room, though i do want to get a 2nd one to keep in my home office. I have considered getting a particular type of hammer that basically looks like a mace (it’s got a super short head) for home defense purposes but i think getting a 2nd bat will work better, i just get hyper focused on shinny new toys so i have to remind myself to be practical :stuck_out_tongue:

Do we need/have a home defense thread?

I think Survival Strategies would work for that.

I always wanted a size-appropriate cricket bat, like one a large kid who’s still a kid would use. A wider surface area is always a good choice.

I have a couple of things that were labeled on Amazon as “Stainless Steel Car Multi-purpose Baseball Bat”.

When they arrived, they very obviously were not baseball bats, being short enough to easily swing one-handed in a doorway, but they have a good weight, a very grippy handle, and a nice backspike.

I also have a pair of 21.5" steel sai and a 48" jo stick (ok, actually it’s a mop handle, but close enough) hanging on my wall which I had to explain to my boss in a zoom call. Yes, they’re just there for decoration. No, I am not actually a teenage mutant ninja turtle.

Combined with a couple of pretty hefty metal maglites, pretty much every room in my house has at least something available to swing, in case any pesky ahem mosquitos get in.

I just find sticks (or variations thereof) to be much cleaner and safer than other alternatives for ahem dealing with mosquitos.

You should have told me. I have a daughter living there who would have offered some good suggestions on places to go and restaurants too.

“It’s a saw, a fancy Japanese saw. Really.”

Oh! I almost was going to ask for suggestions before we left, but I had to work an hour each evening (dinnertime) and that put me off going out except for one nice dinner in ABQ (and we almost didn’t make it to that restaurant because I was being super cranky.

I had a list of places I wanted to visit while we stayed in Santa Fe (Taos, Los Alamos, museums, the capital building, and touring around the neighborhoods and going for trail walks) and we still didn’t hit all of them. We want to go back soon because the people were so friendly, and when we do I promise to reach out. I hear that we still need to try Iconik Coffee!

One day after taiko practice, the director saw someone trying to break into someone’s car. He pulled his odaiko bachi out of his bag – inch-thick, two foot long cypress drumsticks – and starting running toward the guy while yelling in Japanese. I don’t think that particular thief ever returned to that parking lot

(The group also had a baseball bat used to play the odaiko for a gag in one of the songs, but that was kept in a trunk in the building with a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff.)

“Tire iron” is a perfectly cromulent item to have in your car in case you might need to change your tire.

Quite useful, actually.

And you need to thump your tires to make sure they’re properly inflated. They make ones with weighted ends for greater safety.
