Not sure how it fits in that graph, but the covid and healthcare threads i started generated a hell of a lot of responses without being rage bait or cute. Yeah, def not cute. Space and science threads likewise. I think those sort of hark back to what BB was once upon a time. I lurked for a lot of years before joining in 2017. I must have just missed the St Elsewhere massacre, now that i think about it. But way back then, i had the link to BB filed under “Science sites.” Certainly would not be filed there now!
Pretty sure a main motivator for me was the science-y articles as well, followed by the interesting and weird ones. I think i stumbled upon BB on the Yahoo homepage eons ago, they had a small list of suggested sites. Like, not even articles or anything of the sort so i just saw the site name Boing Boing and was like… wtf is that?? And clicked through.
I’ve been infesting y’all since then
Another thing taking me back to memory lane is that i’m relistening to the podcast You Are Not So Smart from the start, they talk about often how the podcast is “part of the Boing Boing podcast family” or something along those lines and looking at it now i’m like… yeah what the hell happened with the podcasts and everything else? It had been a while since i had thought about it.
That would be @mindysan33, m’dear.
Followed by Brainspore, then KathyP, if I remember correctly.
Meanwhile Graccus and I flipped flopped back and forth in 4th place.
Yep, and it looks like I’ll end up in sixth, if I’m looking at it right. Until I’m anonymized.
I honestly don’t remember how long I visited the BB website before I realized, “hey, they have comments?” I lurked for the longest time, getting a feel for the place, before making my first post-- something about an old 80’s sci-fi show, I think. That was not quite 10 years ago-- I would’ve reached that milestone in early January next year.
The Covid thread was one of the reasons I started following the BBS more closely. I usually was good keeping up with the news and disinformation, but there was too much of that for covid, and it was so outside of my area of expertise i did not know where to begin. And I’m sure many felt like me.
Hear, hear
Overall score, sure. Single comment, though!
Sigh, sad to see it go, but I guess this is the last hurrah. Still haven’t decided on anonymization yet, gotta get that decision made soon.
120! Wowzers.
Seconded! To my mind, Mindy and Melizmatic were the KIngs of the BBS!
ETA:
Had I known more abt sus, I never would have had anything to do with it! I finally managed to sign in, (shoulda seen the difficulty as a warning from The Universe!) but couldn’t find nor do anything I wanted to. I’m going to figure out how to dump my acc’t and do so.
I’m going to change some stuff in my profile, like removing my tumblr link, and anon myself at the old place. I only like being scraped by loofa and sisal bath scrubbies! Well, them and my BF’s fingernails when my back’s itchy. ai scrapers can go fuck themselves in base 13 numeration (for the worst possible luck).
I read the Happy Mutant Handbook at work back in the midish 90s, when I worked at a chain bookstore that abominably abused its employees. It was one of the few bright moments while I was there. Can’t even remember when I first looked for the website.
Well, here I was:
…and here I am:
I was kindly invited here during The Great Walkout of August 2023 {which was waaaay more than justified IMNSHO}, and so very much appreciate it!
She’s on BlueSky!
My most-liked reply:
Unfortunately, while quick, the death of the BBS is far from painless.
Mine is 91 and funny enough it’s lowkey putting the author (Rusty) on blast for skipping some key details in the story to make it sound worse
Mine is 101, from when we were all freaking out about Tromp’s insurrection.
((The “fallout” was, as the BB post explained, that a man arrested at the insurrection committed suicide.)
I don’t have numbers like this, at all. To me, it was important that I got a reasonable number of likes, as a way to know I was adding to the conversation, but I knew I was never going to be a rock star at the BBS.
Oh but you WERE!!
And are.
I will say, though, that my top topic was Science FTW. It seemed to fill a need, so should I start the same here as well?
Seconded! and not just 'cause we Great Lakers need to stick together!
