Badass Dragoons of the Highlands - Turn 4 - Amsterdam (c.1602)

The year 1602 would be the next Armistice and one by one the Immortals arrive in the bustling port of Amsterdam.

With the founding of the Dutch East India Company, the city would blossom into a mercantile power that would span the globe trying to feed the insatiable demand for spices and other exotic goods. The forces unleashed by the Renaissance continue the development of art and philosophy across the continent of Europe. And - how delightful - tulips have finally found their way to Europe! Surely a sign of the times and an indication that almost anything is possible.

Turn 4 Deadlines
Orders must be submitted by Fri Oct 20 by 2200 EDT.

Travel options for turn 4 are available.

Quick Links: Table of Contents

Newly Exposed Game Mechanics

Extended Combat: Immortals must select eight combat stances this round. The Archivist should warn you if you haven’t submitted enough stances.

Quickenings: When absorbing the life force of a fallen opponent, Immortals will find themselves in possession of new, seemingly supernatural talents. As new Quickenings are discovered, their effects will be documented for all. Immortals in possession of a Quickening will be much more formidable than the average opponent.

Cruel: Small chance of any normal hit being upgraded to a Critical hit (5%)

Swift reflexes: Improves your stance one step against opponent’s stance in the first two combat rounds1.

Inspired tactics: Able to sense very subtle cues, opponents have a -5 penalty applied to all their rolls.

Unphased: First non-critical hit in combat is shrugged off and does no damage.

1 For example, with both Swift reflexes and Reflexes I, your selected combat stance will be improved to the next best stance on the fly for the first three combat rounds. Against an opponent with just Reflexes I, your stance will be improved for the first two rounds instead.

More news of the death of Immortals since I left Nuremberg. Shemp and The Worker are gone. My old nemesis Red Dog fell afoul of a music lover at the siege of Malta and is no more. I warned him: none ever mastered axe or lute without practice.

Unpleasant encounter this morning while I was strolling near Dam Square. A strange little man dressed as a fool accosted me without proper introduction and told me his name was Justalittle Whinger or some such. He insisted that I visit his shop to peruse his collection of scarves and neckties. “Incredible ones,” he said, “The best. Everyone is talking about them.” Furthermore, he assured me, they were currently being offered at greatly reduced prices.

His motley was embroidered with many sigils and hung about with ornaments intended, I gathered, to indicate his status, which he proceeded to explain in great detail. “And that,” he concluded, “is why I am such a respected person hereabouts. Would you not agree?”

He was an arrogant bore, and my attention had long since drifted elsewhere. “I do beg your pardon, Goodman Wanker,” I replied, “I really wasn’t listening.”

“Whinger,” he said with some annoyance, raising his voice as if I were deaf or slow of wit. “It’s Whinger.”

“My apologies, sir,” I said. “Whinger, you say? Why I believe I have met your sister. Is she the celebrated Debra “Mattressback” Whinger? On my oath, I “knew” her, if you know what I mean, not a fortnight ago in that very alley over there.” I accompanied this with the lewdest wink I could muster. (In truth, I have never met the lady in question, and I have not the slightest doubt that she is as chaste as ice.)

“Varlet!” he shouted, “You have a wicked tongue! I’ll have your head!”

“I’faith, sirrah,” I leered, “that’s what she said.”

With a scream—well more of a squeak—of rage he pulled a wooden mallet from his motley garments and rushed at me. I chopped the silly thing in half and lopped off his head with a backhand stroke.

After events in Malta, old allegiances and grudges seemed meaningless. It was time to cast that off, and forge a new path.

I lost who I was, and wandered, unnamed, for a time. I was drawn back to the sea. But not the azure waters of home - rather, the cold, dark waters of the North Sea. A strange, unforgiving place. Eventually, I took the name Jan Janszoon, and became a privateer based in Haarlem. I found myself invovled in the 80 Years War, harassing Spanish shipping. I had always found something romantic about the way the mortals struggled for independence during their short lives, and I find myself drawn to help. I had seen many empires rise and fall. This time, the Spaniards were the windmill against which I decided to tilt. These minor acts of piracy filled the void, and were entertaining enough, but truly, it was nothing more than a distraction - and it was hardly profitable. I found that I could be more successful if I were a little less picky about which ships I plundered.

I had never lost my taste for trade, either. During my travels over the years, I had also collected many rarieties from the east. I had taken some bulbs from the Ottomans. Eventually, I was able to convince a botanist at the University of Leiden to cultivate these. I had some hopes that there might be some more profit in this endeavour.

Before too long, I would move back to the Mediterranean, and thence to the Barbary Coast, where I would extend my activities. I would form new allegiances, abandon another family, I would cast off my religion again - for what is religion, to an ageless one such as myself - what are gods, if we are not? Here we are. Born to be kings. We’re the princes of the universe.

But I get ahead of myself. Before all that, there was the armistice, in Amsterdam. A city I had grown to know fairly well in these last few years, when I was at port. It was a cosmopolitan place, a hub of commerce, a port of call for refugees, smugglers, businessmen, diplomats . . . and travelers from a hundred cities. My immortal colleagues would fit in well here - or better than anywhere else, at any rate.

My worst fear was that I would encounter that tremendous bore, Mr Collins, again. Doubtless he would attempt to hold court and lecture us badly on things we all knew better than he, perhaps by praising Isabella, and try to finagle us into stategies of “mutual self-interest”, despite us all knowing there could, in the end, be only one (and it was not Juan). Perhaps he’d try to give us fencing lessons again. Perhaps The Worker had got the better of the deal, after all.

Ah well, as it was said: If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, then yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it.

Another century, another armistice. Why I always have to end up where everyone else is, I don’t know. I don’t like cities. I come from a tribe of around twenty or so, and we hunted and foraged over more land than these people put thousands in. Plus they stink.

From what I have been able to determine, the burglar and the madman are no more, but I could swear I saw the sea snake or one of its brethren in one of the canals. I cannot say I am disappointed at their passing, only that I could not have been the one to introduce them to their afterlife.

Oh. Yeah. Like you’ve never thought that about anybody.

Harold, I’ve made you a hot dish for tomorrow night when I’m chaperoning for Billy’s class trip to the city. Warm it in the oven for… Oh, I’ll just write it down and tape it to the fridge for you. If the kids don’t drive me mad, I should be back on Tuesday, and I’m sure you can take care of yourself for that long. And if you get adventurous in the kitchen and try to cut yourself a piece of cheese or something, for goodness’ sakes BE CAREFUL. I just had all the knives sharpened.

AH, the Opera. Yes, Venice brought it the world, but it was actually invented in Florence, not long after we all cleared out.

The Florentine Camerata thought they were re-inventing Ancient Greek Drama, which makes these performances all the more amusing for those of us who saw the original productions. (Did you know “Chorus” originally meant “those who dance”?)

And yet, one has to applaud these contemporary Italians - this newfangled Opera is superior entertainment to the slow moving dramas of old!

So off to Venice I go!

Yours in Truth,

Mr. Collins

Nota bene: Must find a new way to get my journals to [words scratched out]. It makes no sense to send by way of Padua any more, and I suspect that Kit Marlowe has been opening the packages. Some phrases of mine have shown up in his plays. It’s bad enough that he has been stealing what is mine by right of copy, but that cream-faced loon Will Shakespeare is getting all the credit. But Kit could always smile and smile and be a villain. Does he not understand that word-piracy hurts all honest poets?

It almost makes me wish I had told Bess of his whereabouts while I was still in her favour, but I am no traitor to my friends (unlike some who may be reading this my private journal, eh, Kit?). Anyway, it’s too late now, Bess is old, and I was wise to stay away from such stratagems lest I be dragged in. Bess may have the heart and stomach of a king, but she has her father’s mean streak. I’ve known Immortals who were less keen on chopping off heads.

Biographer’s note:
This manuscript, apparently by Sir Other Pendragon, was found on a scrap of parchment discarded in his chambers in Amsterdam, ca. 1602 and retained by a housemaid, possibly for the herbal recipe on the other side [citation needed]. The parchment has been crumpled and smoothed out repeatedly. It has many stains (sweat? tears?) and appears to have been stabbed with a dagger numerous times.
