BoingBoing move to substack

At least mr. Frauenfelder is quite active there. Didnā€™t know he was tech supportā€¦

In my experience, few things excite a libertarian more than the prospect of making fat stacks (of money).

I got an offer for the first month free if I subscribed to another of his blogs now apparently on Substack. Either Recommendo or Cool Tools.

I didnā€™t take the offer.

I took the life time free offer because I didnā€™t want to loose you people. Then I got in here. I will keep it because I want to read the archives.

Kinda curious, anyone have any info as to whats happening with boingboing?

Iā€™m guessing they cratered the community, but i wonder how the main site fairs as a result?

I stopped caring

They moved the main site to SubStack and made the ā€œclassic BBā€ site read-only. I went to check it out before coming here, and it was unusable for what (I think) most of us value, the community, the discussion, the comradery. Itā€™s like a huge group test. No bueno. Have not been back.

It alarms and saddens me how quickly it has dropped out of my daily routine, other than emails it was pretty much my first port of call every day.

The page is still up with new stories being posted, but it goes to substack for commentsā€¦ scroll to the bottom and youā€™ll see the linkā€¦ the couple of times Iā€™ve looked, it seems like a ghost townā€¦

Iā€™ve manually added this forum into my daily tab load, but removed BB.

Curious for how other people are managing

Same.

I certainly donā€™t miss all the rage-bait headlines, the crap authors, and the nasty comments. I was already missing a lot of The Good Stuff when they sprang substack on us, and Iā€™m hardly what Iā€™d call a veteran of the website.

Iā€™m just relieved so many of us made it here.

For me itā€™s been a hard adjustment. I liked the variety of news/posts but yeah, without the community engagement I just donā€™t feel the need to keep up with it. If some folks want to use it still thatā€™s good, I just donā€™t feel welcome anymore

Iā€™ve been reading it a bit. I donā€™t really mind throwing them some eyeballs. But I donā€™t feel like talking or anything on there either. I think Iā€™m just going to spectate.

This place is most certainly pinned to my new tab page on firefox and i think the switching cost coming here has been very low indeed when so many have made the move across and itā€™s the same forum software. I would engage more with the community over on substack but a) itā€™s just too quiet and b) the user experience is profoundly unsatisfying.

Managing fine here. Elsewhere has easily replaced BoingBoing for me, and I think I like it better here. Iā€™ve been checking in on BB every now and then to see whatā€™s being posted, but discovering that articles of value and interest were already few and far between over there and I donā€™t miss it as much as I expected.

I peek at the new site from time to time but it is just not the same without the community. Coming here is a much better experience.

Here I was playing around on reddit trying to get things going and looky here.

This is kind of nice.

As far as Substack, meh, the articles are nice but the interaction, whether comments on articles or chat, seems like the dark ages.

I think I remember the history of why this was setup but whatever the reason, itā€™s very nice.

Whoever is running it, thanks.
