BoingBoing move to substack

I’m a member of a few Discord communities, mostly related to Twitch streamers. The platform has its uses; it’s really good for watching movies together, but if you’re in multiple communities the volume of messages gets dizzying fast. Voice chat’s interesting too, but I haven’t figured out how to make that work on my tablet yet.

It’s a nice place, but I like the Discourse platform better.

I used to watch movies with my friend in Seattle. It was great for one-to-one voice chats, too. Otherwise, no, thank you.

This showed up in my RSS feed today, and hit the nail on the head:

Specifically:

The term “enshittification” was coined in 2023 by Cory Doctorow to describe the ways in which digital platforms that had once been invaluable to us slowly became worse and worse. The American Dialect Society chose enshittification as its word of the year in the year of its invention. As Doctorow put it: “Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.”

Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.

Oh the irony.

Makes me glad I asked to anonymize. Even if I cannot delete everything

I’m glad Slate is giving Cory credit! But I believe he coined the term several years before 2023

Edit: damned autoincorrect and distracting cat

After popping over at bb and sniffing around a bit, it seems that Elsewhere is now far, FAR more active. Very nice!!

I’ve always assumed, without proof, that he was a nom de plume for Mark’s more whimsical side.

Exactly, me too. I thought the same of EllsworthToohey, whatever side that would be. A trollish one, I suppose.

Sekhmet just commented over there that they don’t know if anonymization will be possible after the BBS is locked. Hopefully that’s clarified before the option expires.

I messaged Orenwolf on Monday and asked to be anonymized prior to the shutdown. He replied he will get it done.

This very conversation prompted me to do the same. Thanks!

I talked to him too, and he reminded me that once my account is anonymized, there is no way to un-anonymize it. I’m not sure I give a fuck at this point, though. I’d rather that instead of having an account floating around in the hopes that this will one day be re-opened…

I think I’m asking tomorrow.

Yeah. I told him I understood and would like to have it done. The very remote possiblity BB rises again isn’t worth having all that stuff out there when I cannot edit or change it.

I’m thinking of doing the same. It’s a tough decision though.

Indeed… good call!

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too…

Not just me, then… I’m sort of agonizing over it…

I don’t want to do it.

I just think it’s the right idea.

this is one where i would throw down the “thinking” rraction emoji, given the expanded reaction menu.
i never put that together for the popkin contributor, but i do ahree that the toohey puppet was mark playing at AI content.

Exactly.

No worries. We’re pretty relaxed around here. I try to keep my inner taxonomist suppressed. He’s so controversial.

It’s a decent chat app. I was mostly alluding to the part where they tried to shoehorn a forum interface into it, and it does absolutely nothing for me. It’s also a centrally managed platform that will ultimately fail it’s users like so many others.

Please vote if you haven’t already:

It’s not the most important ballot anyone’s going to be involved with in the next week, but it’s probably the one you’ll have the most direct impact in.

I suspect it won’t be once they switch to ready-only. That’s intended for certain maintenance tasks. I’ve used it before when I needed to make a backup to restore to a new instance. Since anonymizing posts requires rewriting the DB, I don’t know how that could work when the DB is read-only. I’ve never tested it, though.
