Proposal: Install Discourse Reactions Plugin

Based on feedback from several new and returning users, there is interest in being able to react to posts using more than just the standard heart emoji.

Here’s a link to the plugin that will be installed if this proposal receives wide support:

From the page linked above:

Overview

Discourse-reactions is a plugin that allows user to add their reactions to the post. This plugin can engage more audiences to the post. Users who may not have previously wanted to Like your content are now able to send more specific signals about how your content makes them feel. Users who may not have wanted to use their phones to post can now use them to “react” much easier.

Reactions can be different on each website as we have an amazing feature where site admin can set their list of emojis which can be used as reactions.

To customize the reactions use the site setting discourse_reactions_enabled_reactions and define emojis you want as reactions separated by | eg: open_mouth|cry|angry

This plugin will work as an add-on to the likes feature, anytime you want to remove the plugin, all likes will be preserved.

I’ll leave this poll open for a week or so, in the hopes that we can get enough votes to get a definitive decision on this.

Should we install the Discourse Reactions Plugin?

I have no experience with these. I don’t see any reason not to have them. Can they become a problem?

The main thing I noticed over there with the reaction emojis is that they tend to be sticky - for example, if you accidently give a post a like, it can be hard on some browsers/systems to undo it. It has a weird timer that blocks changes after 2 tries in less than a minute.

They were installed over at BB about a year ago.
There was a little grumbling at first, but I personally, and I think most of the BBers, came to appreciate the different reactions.

Famously though, there is still no “puke” emoji.
(That was kind of an in-joke at the other place).

I think they’re a great idea.

I think there can be some issues where a person takes the :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: personally. But that is more about the culture of its use. As long as it is understood the emojis are about the post, it should be fine.
I don’t think a whole pallet of emojis would be useful. But I do want a

I think my main reservation would be with the reason “downvote” options have been removed from a lot of sites, with possibility of hurt feelings and discussion sidetracks. Not that I’d expect that kind of issue here, but a possibility.

Yes, that’s an accurate picture of me most of the time.

I didn’t see that “over there.” I have a problem responding to some of the election coverage, especially Il Douche and his fascist bedfellows, with a  That feels very ick. The expanded palate of options is not (IMHO) directed at the poster, but at the story. Does everyone see it that way? Can’t answer, but probably there is someone who would take it as a personal affront. But I can’t say I saw that over there, and I was very active and involved.

The only one I find ambiguous is the “thinking” emoji. Does that mean that it made the reader think or that they found the post confusing?

Now we can go to our summaries and see the “# likes received” and “# likes given.” Will this now be split up into the various different responses?

Case in point - that needs a great big smiley!

:grinning:

All reactions are counted as likes, IIRC.

Sort of. It is split into likes and then there is a separate tab/area for reactions

I’m having issues uploading a screenshot

Although, oddly enough, one gets separate notifications for the first like and the first reaction. (or at least one used to.)

Reactions definitely all aggregate into likes for “Nice Reply” “Good” “Great” etc.

Not as sure about statistics.

I certainly do, if by “story” you mean the content of a comment.

Maybe if they’re added here, a note to that effect could be highlighted; “these reactions are to be used to express reactions to the content of a comment, and NOT to the commenter.”
