DM’s were off when I tried earlier. I missed my shot, I guess.
That’s her direct number, I think I probably dialled an extension.
Or maybe you called her bunner phone?
Both of them were just dissapeared from the list of authors without any announcement, and all we got was a confirmation that they were indeed gone. Neither of them have given any follow up reasons, but from the radio silence, I can assume that there was something that happened. And Cory’s subsequent launch of his own website https://pluralistic.net/ with very prominent “No Trackers No Ads” stance is perhaps a sign of where he is.
Before yesterday, one messaged a moderator or administrator. Now that the site is read-only, that might not be feasible. Can’t hurt to gently ask Orenwolf (he’s on this site), but maybe be prepared for a “can’t”.
that you are, professor.
that you are.
Please don’t contact the community mods for anonymization. We got word late last night that they lost mod access, and as much as I’d imagine they’d love to help, they can’t.
Ken (as Orenwolf) is the one to talk to.
I did change my linked email so it’s now a burner rather than “my name @ email server.” I’m ready for a fight and to take some assholes down with me if need be. But I’m not reckless!
I think you are probably right with that one.
Back in 2020 I was emailing him about something and was giving him info about how the furry subculture was embracing social VR though the pandemic as the sort of thing that might get written about on BB and he ended the response with:
I didn’t press but that was a “Oh my” moment.
I’m sure i remember listening to one of his podcasts shortly after he left saying his departure was unexpected and not planned so i am liable to suspect he was quietly shown the door but i doubt we’ll ever truly know. Maybe.
I am one of the newbies; even though I had a BB forum account for… a while, I think it was just after the 2017 debacle that spawned this place.
I, for one, am glad that I was invited here, and I am glad to see that I am among friends.
It’s not a mystery. He left to focus on his stuff, and also due to something another now-ex BB Author was doing at the time that he didn’t want to be associated with (none of which involves what has been speculated on here) He is still a BB partner behind the scenes. There’s zero animosity there.
No one at BB has ever liked ads or all that crap, the requests for even more of that crap for less revenue is what prompted this change in the first place. Hopefully Substack can replace enough of the ad revenue that BB can get back to its roots again. Here’s hoping, a torrent of users have signed up, more than I think we hoped for, so I’m optimistic.
Fun fact: my own association with BB began on Halloween 2003, when the hosting provider for BB disappeared and I had to run my own desktop - a P233MMX - down to a friends Datatcenter as a favour to Cory!
And now I need a surprised face emoji!
Wow, that’s quite a superhero origin story!
Fair enough. I’ve never heard him say a bad word about BB since leaving so it’s good to know he’s still a partner. It’s easy for us all to speculate when it all seemed so sudden and, to me, Cory was once intrinsic to that place and we wanted answers despite having no right to ask for them.
That does surprise me. Or maybe not. I dunno.
I hope that it leads to your wish coming true though.
Some friends and I have been running a video game program for 25 years (fun fact: we recently made into the Guiness Book of records!) and when you run things for that long one of the facts of life is that people come and go. For example, our original showrunner (let’s call him TOS) drifted away because although he still enjoyed making the program, we decided that it was always going to be free and unsponsored, and well, he wanted to pursue a professional career, and needed the money.
I left for almost 8 years because I moved to another place - and that was the time than doing the program in remote was not really an option - and returned temporarily 6 years ago to fill the gaps in the lineup (along with TOS’s departure some others started dropping too)… then stayed because I discovered I still enjoyed very much doing this.
When TOS left many of our listeners started throwing conspiration theories around. We decided not to try to clarify anything publicly because… usually is a waste of time: people tend to already have an idea about what happened and will try to twist whatever we say. Turns out silence is no more or less difficult to twist, but doesn’t require effort on our part to handle
As for other reasons… on an unpaid program like ours, the most common is passion cooling, along with mounting life responsabilities. The program evolves (I listen the shows from 15 years ago and cringe a lot ) and some people doesn’t take well the evolution. A couple though we were much much more professional than we really are, and wanted to intern with us: did not go well.
The most common reason, though, is that people change, and they just don’t feel identified with the show, and leave to do their own thing - And I’m happy to say that most of the people who left to do their own thing has been successfull and kept friendly relations with us
This year we had to drop the weekly schedule to do the show every two weeks. We are too few to keep it weekly, and during the last two seasons was very difficult, specially at the end, to muster the energy, to find time, even if is fun. While most of the community was supportive of the decision, most of our listeners weren’t very happy about this: but what can we do? Shô ga nai
All in all, what I’m trying to say is that on a super-long project like this one, is not unusual to see big departures. Sometimes is even necessary, as long as you’re able to fill the gaps. Otherwise well, the project decays, and you end up having to take unpopular decisions. Or at least that’s my take.
And no, is not a metaphor. The show exists, we post the shows online, but is in spanish so probably not much interesting for you guys
Also, the guiness link.
My email was always a burner created for BB, used so little that last year the provider assumed it was abandoned and deleted all my old emails. Now I’m glad I set it up.
