BoingBoing move to substack

Given his level of enthusiasm for the switch to SuS, I’m thinking more and more that he was the prime mover in making it happen – more than Jason. It seems that’s what the Californian Ideology gets you: Nazis for neighbours in your McMansion exurb.

On a related note, @orenwolf: are all the logs, IP addresses, etc. on the old BBS wiped? I know you’re probably way ahead of me here, but it would be some comfort to know it’s sorted.

So, someone from this site and the other site pointed me over here to sign up, it’s nice and just like old times.

But, I got a DM from someone telling me this site was invite only and I shouldn’t share it with users from the old site because they need to get vetted here first.

Some of you know I tried setting up a private sub reddit before I knew this place was around. There are about 12 people from BB that joined.

These two users from BB don’t seem to be here unless they used a different name.

Does anyone mind if I let them know about this forum?

Well, there we go…

I was always quite oblivious to a lot of the drama there.

Elsewhere & BB were my first stops. Elsewhere first bc traffic was slower and I could quickly get caught up on everything.

My how things have changed! It has been impossible to keep up with postings here lately.

Curious shift of landing page format over there this morning. (after a header, i see a huge clipped image of the first article’s imagery) probably they’ll have it ‘fixed’ (altered a bit in reverse) soon (…?)

I do recommend to use the /blog subpage to read the site, as otherwise is quite hard.

If only all my problems were this wonderful.

Or just not read the site. Given how its owners treated us, and how crapified its content had become, BoingBoing is dead to me.

I’m feeling kind of grateful BB did what they did. I feel safer here after yesterday’s news

but but… i’ve grown fond of R.Beschizza’s tech/nerd postings over the decades! -sigh-

With some of the writing/stories recently, I wondered if some were AI generated. It was just my opinion as some of them really felt like those auto-generated websites that dominate the first few pages of Google search results these days.

Personally, it’s been removed from my favorites list, but this is a bit like drugs. Not everyone can quit cold turkey, and sometimes is better to offer ways to softly ease off

You weren’t alone in that. Many of us suspected especially that Ellswoth Toohey’s posts were AI generated, or at least Mark playing around with AI.

Legit the bummer for me is the lack of Rob’s shitposting. At least he’s haunting the rafters of this place like the weird fae spirit he is.

I will admit that I’ve been lazy and haven’t kicked it out of my RSS feed… yet.

Are there any other good news sites that are similar to BB, but without the baggage it’s accumulated?

For tech stuff, I hit up Hackaday and The Register, which does a fairly decent job keeping me reasonably up to date in my industry.

I avoid the comment section like the plague, but the selection of news at slashdot is still relevant.

I used to enjoy the slashdot comments back in the noughties, though it was pretty funny watching the ever-escalating battle between the trollies and site mods, somewhat similar to the battle between fungi and bacteria, no side ever held the high ground for long.

Ugh… I signed up for an account at Slashdot well after I started reading it. Still have my “5 digit” account. A friend of mine has a “3 digit” account.

Yes, gone are the days when reading Slashdot at comment level 3 was worthwhile… :person_shrugging:

Why? As far as I can tell, Hackaday is not related to either Hacker News or Y Combinator.

Reading comprehension fail on my part. Hackaday is cool.
