I miss that guy. They were hilarious.
The âSt Elsewhereâs Day Massacreâ also led to the creation of the pseudo-Lounges behind the scenes of the old BBS. The original Regulars Lounges included ones devoted to griping about persistent trolls like Mister44, Medievalist, and Max_Blancke. Jason deleted all the Lounges when a couple of the trolls became Regulars, saw they were the subject of complaints and mockery, and whinged to TPTB. We just immediately re-created them using rolling DMs.
A bunch of us ran those behind the walls for almost eight years with only Ken (and perhaps Rob) knowing about it. There were rules (e.g. no brigading, no organised flagging) and we abided by them well enough that Ken let them continue to exist.
They served as a safety valve so that our exasperation with, say, 44âs gunwanking or Mediâs nitwittery didnât constantly boil over into the public Topics. We were also responsible for finally getting Max and his submarine accounts banned, as well as other trolls like Flapjack. We also IDed potential new trolls and brought them to Kenâs attention before they became long-term problems.
I must admit, I donât miss the ammosexuality.
I donât miss the condescending techdouches and muskholes, either.
There was a second wave of joiners when the regular women posters walked out of bb a few years back due to ongoing sexism. Which lead to some changes at bb.
This would be the third influx.
Yeah, I joined in that second wave. I wasnât very active in the BBS back in 2017, so I missed all that, even though I had been a member for several years by that point.
Thatâs when I came over too.
I was mostly a lurker on BB back in 2017 so I missed most of the drama that led to this place coming to be. I didnât really get into many discussions back then since who wants to hear the opinion of yet another mediocre white guy? I didnât get really active in the BBS until I came out as trans in 2021.
Likewise. I had just joined in 2017 after lurking for a bunch of years. I only learned about the massacre after being invited âbehind the scenesâ and hearing from the wise veterans about it.
We just immediately re-created them using rolling DMs.
Hopefully you all left this cliquish bullshit behind when you came here.
Whatâs clique-ish about objecting to abusive behavior and finding ways to cope with it?!
I was just an antisocial. I was def around and active, but I was hesitant to engage in a lot of the community topics, I canât explain why. Maybe I wouldnât have great things to share, impostor syndrome, I dunno. Iâm still trying to shake off those antisocial behaviors, but I mostly missed the first two dust ups. I vague recall some update posts and people saying good bye. This year I was getting more involved with the BBS and then all of this happened {waves wildly}
Nope. The first ban (at that time) was MO, but his was relatively short. He actually came back after it to say farewell in his inimitable fashion. It was OtherMichael who subsequently received ten years.
The old regularâs lounge granted access to the people based on their level of interaction with the community. It was programmatic and objective. Read enough messages, post enough comments, and you proved that you were dedicated to the community.
These rolling mass DMs apparently granted access to the people based on subjective methods, and excluded others, even if the motives were well-intentioned.
No one wants to feel like theyâve been excluded.
Hmmm⌠can you add me on to all of your DMs here?
I wouldnât want to feel excluded.
No one wants to feel unsafe or bullied. And that was a common experience of ALL women now here at the old place.
How the fuck do you think that makes us feel? Or does that not matter?
Sorry, but some of us do believe in excluding assholes, esp in such bigoted times as these. No one deserves to be abused and othered.
No one is owed a platform, esp an asshole.
People are allowed to have private and semi-private conversations. In real life and online. You are also allowed to do that. Thatâs not cliquish.
I literally came here because we staged a walkout from BB about that shit.
Whisper networks/back channels exist for a reason. Itâs not because weâre a bunch of mean girls who like to gossip, but because we have to have those if we want to be safe.
