BoingBoing move to substack

I still not quite sure how I got invited to Elsewhere years ago but I’m SO glad I did. Perhaps not being an asshole (well, perhaps only occasionally?) helped. I hope we can keep it going as a safe, fun, and intelligent place.

I do find it peculiar that given all the Nazis at TOP, the PTB decided to use a system abbreviated SS.

Give it a month after the month subcriptions die off and then see.

Btw . . . Welcome!

Agreed. And I think that 12 months’ time will/would be a ‘break’ point, if it weren’t that the impression I get is that so many of the free subs are already largely inactive.

And Orenwolf already said a while back that the number of new subscribers very much outnumbered the new paid for ones that had come along since the SS ad-free instance was put up. (Which they are still plugging hard at the old place.)

(And nice to see you! )

ETA I wonder how many do subscribe to SS on a month-by-month basis? Is it much cheaper to do it annually? (Can’t be arsed to go and look.)

Fuzzyfuzzfungus is a frequent commenter on Ars. I have no idea if that is the same individual, though

I went and checked it out when this all went down. The whole “group chat” set-up is not really amenable to the sort of discusdion and commentary thst made BB what it was. I suppose that could change, but it would take a very long time to grow a new community. I don’t have the bandwidth for that at this point. Especially when the community is still alive and thriving here. I doubt i will go back there, honestly. I’m not that curious.

Is that what led to the creation of Elsewhere? I’ve been a little curious about that ever since getting invited here. All I know is that it was formed in reaction to some event in BB’s past. I might have been reading articles back then but wasn’t dialed in to the community enough at that point to notice anything going on.

Thank you! I’m very happy to be here, and see all of you! I had thought that the community had evaporated after TOP (I’m learning “the lingo”) switched to SuS.

Search this very BBS for “jlw”, “happy fun ball” / HFB, “Jason”, “angry owl”, etc. and you’ll get plenty of examples.

Elsewhere was founded April 11, 2017 in response to a series of bannings (aka the massacre) over on the old place, including one ban of 10 years (@OtherMichael, I believe).

The main founders were @tinoesroho and @LockeCJ

Other names bandied about:

Credit where it’s due: That was poor ModusOperandi, I believe. I can’t imagine that he said anything ban-worthy. There was some discussion about the TV show St Elsewhere. I missed the whole thing. I think it was cleaned up and deleted by the time I found out.

And I would like to point the new people to this topic. A place to introduce yourself and see who else is here.

Thanks, another piece of the puzzle.

I discovered the BBS at TOP late; I’m usually allergic to comment sections. By the time I had an account and started following some old threads, I noticed a lot of “This use is no longer active” among some previously very busy posters. I wondered what happened. It felt like too many to be the usual attrition numbers.
