I dunno. I think a lot of people passively “subscribe” to things. SS pushes out dreck and you just kind of randomly suck it up. That’s how it feels to me. That’s part of the issue I have with it.

But for what that platform is and the people who use it I think BB has simply found a venue that works for publishing things that keep it afloat probably.

Community members and discourse are not needed (generally not specifically BB). Frankly places who have them are flooding them with ai/bots anyway at this point. So from a survival and financial pov it’s unimportant I think.

Now if we were going to try to build something there it would behind a paywall that screens out all but those dedicated enough to pay for whatever and we could be trying to see if there are ways to have meaningful discourse on that platform.

But every time I take a look at it I think no… this platform is designed for passive subscriptions. It almost deliberately breaks communication. One would do just as well to have a site like this BBS or another private server tangentially related to the site as a subject? But then then why post on the SS? If safety is a concern… the safest place is not on that site for instance?
