C'mon Guys (Toxic Masculinity)

At least one 2023 survey found that deepfake pornography has already become normalized adult entertainment, with 74 percent of 1,522 US male deepfake porn users reporting they “don’t feel guilty” about viewing it.

Gaaahhh, men suck. On the list of things that need to die in a fire.

Well, I’m glad I never saw the new Captain America movie. What is this masculinity that is so easily killed? Why can they never actually define what the hell they mean when they say masculinity is being destroyed?

Conservatives hate him / the movie because he / the movie are too woke (e.g. oh no he’s black! And he says that America does not currently have the traits that Captain America values).

I’m finding a little bit online about how Mackie is kind of a creep toward women? I just don’t want to follow that up. Blech.

Also an interviewer said afterward that Mackie was an asshole and the worst interview he’d ever done, which apparently you’re not supposed to do as a journalist but I say, better to know who the assholes are earlier rather than later…

Yes, it’s maddeningly vague on how he’s raising them to be those respectful men, isn’t it? Invoking a drill Sargent is a bit worrying, though. Why would you berate your children?

i’ll have to ask my father and get back to you on that…

As I posted elsewhere, the new Cap movie goes out of its way to avoid politics, while the new Daredevil has Wilson Fisk as an obvious stand-in for Trump becoming mayor of New York, and Matt Murdoch beating up corrupt Punisher-worshipping cops, just in the first two episodes. It’s hard to believe these are coming out of the same studio.

i gotta check that out!
D’Onofrio IS Fisk. by that, i mean he is the embodiment of Kingpin, in my mind.
it’s like he was born to play that part.

also: beating up “Punisher” cops… i’m all in!

They even have Fisk’s wife not wanting to appear in public with him. It’s not exactly a subtle metaphor.

On a sad note, apparently being cast the play a big cat themed superhero with a color modifier in the name is bad luck. The actor who played White Tiger in the first 3 episodes died of cancer in December 2023, shortly after filming wrapped. As with Chad Boseman, his coworkers didn’t know, although they noticed he seemed to be in a lot of pain during filming. This seems appropriate to point out in this particular thread.

The Captain America movie was BORING. Daredevil has been AWESOME. :person_shrugging:

The best Marvel thing ever is still Legion

Yes, I have been describing it as the okayest movie I have ever seen. It’s not good. It’s not bad. It’s just . . . ok. It might actually be more interesting if it were bad.

Nah, I’m not giving him as much benefit of the doubt in interpreting his words as the author did there.

Mackie related how his 15-year-old takes charge when he’s gone. . . . They [single men] can assume the same role as a 15-year-old boy looking out for his mother and siblings.

Why is a 15 year old child being put in charge of his own adult mother? When my dad went out of town, he didn’t put my older brother in charge. He didn’t put anyone in charge because my dad wasn’t “in charge” of the household. Both of my parents were in charge of the household. So when my dad wasn’t there, mom was the sole authority. And when dad was there, they were co-equal authorities. No, sorry, Anthony Mackie is still spouting some toxic masculinity bullshit.

The idea of anyone being “in charge” of my mother makes me laugh, but also feel bad for whoever it was who thought they were in charge. They were about to meet a grisly end.

Same. My mom, in her prime, was about 5 feet nothing. She was a high school English teacher. I witnessed her making a 6’4", 300 lb football player take a couple of steps back in fear just by giving him “that look”. She was not a woman to be trifled with.

I’m not sure how to read it but also don’t really want to try too hard… But… “in charge” or “takes charge” makes a difference. “Takes charge” reads to me more like “takes on more family responsibility” while “in charge” reads like some kind of weird religious sex cult shit which is really trending these days so who knows…

But I’m tired of people tying themselves into knots trying to reconcile the complexity of actual humans into a couple of hard sided gender polygons so that they don’t have to face themselves and then projecting it onto society and that seems like what the article ultimately is.

Masculinity isn’t dying. Men can be whatever the fuck they want to be but some can’t cope with all that freedom or mistakenly think that means they’ll never face adversity at all.

It feels to me like someone who has always liked Anthony Mackie trying to rationalize something he said that they didn’t like. And I get that. It feels like every other day, some successful famous dude we thought was decent turns out to be an ass. Not that Mackie is in this category, but I don’t like what he said. I think it’s problematic, and I’m not going to twist myself into a pretzel to make it not be problematic.
