Spoiler blurs, please!
the spy was busted cause tribbles hate klingons. a fall out of the great tribble klingon war.
I’m so glad there are astronauts out there who understand the impact and necessity of taking a photo like this.
i’m pretty sure this is the closest thing to a dr who thread in these here parts.
and… i’m slowly realizing matt smith is my favorite (modern) doctor. does that make me a bad person?
i mean peter capaldi may have reverse invented tom baker’s mad grin. and david tenant was all timey wimey. but matt smith is six feet tall, wears a bow tie, and… the episodes are just so good.
please correct me. i know i am so wrong.
Not at all! It’s all personal opinion, yeah? I’m actually inclined to agree, too. I really like Smith as the Doctor.
i never had any problem with ANY of the modern doctors, but then i’ve seen them all, and i’m used to learning to love each new actor’s take on the character. they are all great in one way or another.
and here’s the videos of it, which are worth watching:
My requirements:
- No war
- Actual science fiction (OK, Star Trek style “science” fiction), not just drama set in the future
- Sense of wonder (see original series)
- Arcs are OK, but for gosh sake, give us stories that begin and end in an episode (see Babylon 5)
- Make it upbeat! Danger and tension OK, but please no more grimness (see #1 )
- Horror is not Star Trek. Star Trek is not horror.
Do you hear me, CBS???
(Oh, and make DVD’s available after a year. I can wait.)
Can I be afraid they’ll fuck it up? Do we really need more Star Trek?
(Specifically,
Not really, but I wouldn’t mind more Jean-Luc Picard in “something different” (as Patrick Stewart says in his announcement). He’s such a fine actor.
Oh, yes. That’s one thing the network suits are REALLY good at. I hope Stewart has demanded some level of artistic control. I trust his judgement more than some of the people producing such stuff.
I don’t know. He seems a little insouciant in recent years.
For example:
Not to mention:
Voyager and Deep Space 9 shows the Federation has pretty much conquered spacetime. They’re hitting godlike status by the end of Voyager.
I love Star Trek, but it’s always been space opera, never science fiction in the sense of hard SF. I don’t really think that would fit Star Trek, it should be more upbeat than that.
The tearjerker drama episodes are kinda amusing when you suddenly realize that as a grown man you’ve been tricked into getting totally caught up in the emotional drama of a soap opera, but now it’s too late.
Totally agree with the rest, especially the upbeat, no grimness please! That’s the sort of thing that we need more of.
That’s ok, it would be totally consistent for them to completely forget all about that. From TOS on, they were constantly inventing new technobabble with ways to make the engines faster, weapons and shields more powerful, etc., in episode after episode. But after each episode things would go back to normal and they’d never mention it or use it again. The one notable exception that I remember was the borg story arc.
Yeah, I forgot the phrase space opera when I was struggling to put into words the kind of sf Star Trek is. I’ve also seen it called science fantasy.
.
Science fantasy is quite a different genre. That’s when a ragtag band of misfit adventurers of mixed races and classes take up their magical glowing techno swords and venture forth to go rescue a princess from the great dark evil wizard that’s trying to take over the interplanetary empire. I won’t mention any here by name, but I’m sure you can think of a story like that. Plenty of people like that, but it’s a very different genre.
