Did Somebody Say "Star Trek"?

I’m not sure I agree with his point about the Nazis not being “colonial”? Is it only colonization if it happens outside of Europe? After all, plenty of people have made the point that what happened during the second world war, was the logic of colonialism turned on Europeans (some of whom were also colonized - such as Ireland)…

Food for thought, but I don’t know that finding exact historical parallels for fiction is always the best way to go about thinking about said fiction… Influence more than exact replications. He gets there in the end… But yeah…

Given that they (German Nazis) explicitly wanted to depopulate swathes of Europe to put in homesteaders of good German stock: no.

And that’s if you ignore the whole apparatus of imperialism being brought home. The Shoah is only a singular event in human history if you think the history of European colonialism didn’t actually happen.

Yeah, that part. I like how Naomi Klein put it with regards to history - story 1 - the progress-oriented teleological story, that unfortunate things happened, but wasn’t it all for the best historical account and story 2 - that Europeans wrecked the world for their own profit at the expense of everyone else, and that things like the holocaust are exactly that, the violence visited upon others turned inward. We could say much the same of things today with regards to the US and what’s happening under Trump…

There seems to be a new wave of British historians who are willing to actually discuss the violence of Colonialism these days, which is good to see.

I really need to pick up a copy of Caroline Elkins book…

Ow, my too long reading list… :sob: I’m not getting any younger and I’ll never get all these books in on time… I will die with books unread… :sob:

Shit, what’s the topic of the thread… oh yeah… STAR TREK…

I was somewhat guilty of that when TNG was broadcast. I have since grown to quite appreciate Wheaton, and Wesley.

Oh daaang! That’s a Dr. Demento-level deep cut! I never knew there was a video!

Exclamation point!

Youtuber Damian Walter (Science Fiction with Damien Walter) has a new video out on Star Trek as a form of propaganda, and I’m having a hard time watching it, because it starts out with a bunch of AI generated “liberals” angrily denouncing the idea that Star Trek is “liberal propaganda”… is it just me, or has his stuff gone down hill in the past couple of years?

Like, what in the actual fuck is that mess. I think you can make your point without being such a dick on people with different perspectives, boiling it down to some raging SJW stereotypes…

And he can’t even spend two seconds googling the title of the later shows to get the name correct…
