The illegal immigrant from SA won’t have any power, and eliminating departments requires legislation. Plus, it turns out you can’t just fire union employees without well documented cause and AFSHME is yuge. The parts of the government the Orange Menace wants to keep working won’t if there’s even a half serious attempt at illegally firing workers en masse.
Unions are awesome. We should have more of them.
[I personally know several AFSHME members fired without cause who won their grievances, got their jobs back *and* back pay, only to finish out their careers and collect their pensions. And that’s just on a local *municipal* level.

I agree, and I live in Australia where the union movement is still strong. It’s one of the things that makes life a bit more bearable here. We need more.
I have heard, but haven’t checked, that unions are one of the things that habitually slows or blocks authoritarians of all stripes. If anyone has links or references for someone who likes history but isn’t a serious historian and is short on time, it’d be muchly appreciated.

We talked briefly about it. We have the resources and ability to relocate, but way deep ties here and a whole lot of white privilege. So we will do what we can to support the community through what I expect to be a rough time. Was talking to a therapist friend yesterday about that. She is organizing a barter community, and I offered whatever I could do. Not sure what use I would be, and she said the same thing. But whatever it is, we will do what we can.
