You would think Trump was already president by the lack of leadership coming from the WH. The current president has more than two months left in office. He should be rallying political leaders — and all Americans — by announcing steps that will make it easier for us to resist fascism next year.
Well yeah, if Biden could be stirred enough to even identify Tromp as a fascist. I don’t remember him ever doing that.
That, he at least did:
Hell. Yes.
Hmm… :: ponders if the ‘winter’ boots they have in the closet are steel toe or not, and if they are still any good ::
I mean, I don’t need steel toes to do that, mostly because I pull the horse-style kick- turn around, and slam backwards with a leg, although that might break bones. (not mine, theirs.)
but also conveniently disrupt some of President-elect Donald Trump’s merchandise, which says “45-47” in reference to Trump being the 45th and 47th president.
I have a FOAF that has been circulating a petition proposing this very course of action (step down and let Harris finish out the term). This merch spoiler was literally my first thought (petty as it is, it was a bit of internal levity). That, and Mike Johnson being next up if something happened to Harris.
Anyway, it’s a fanciful thought experiement but I just don’t see it happening short of something unexpected happening to Biden in the next 10 weeks. Biden doesn’t need to step down to make some big moves before his term is up since at this point he should have no further fucks to give, but with an uncooperative Congress in recess, I just don’t see anything meaningful happening and that’s a goddamn shame.
I’m sorry, but I see no reason to do this, other than so some Democrats can feel a little better about the current situation… I also feel it would be a bit insulting to a woman who has clearly worked hard for her entire career to get to where she is… Like, “oh well, too bad you live in a shitty society that hates your for who you are, have this consolation prize…” So, no, I think it’s a shit idea all the way around.
Don’t get me wrong, I completely agree with you. My internal monologue on this was more gallows humor than an endorsement of the idea (which I think we can all agree will never happen unless Biden is incapacitated).
There was so much unfair criticism heaped on Harris for how she even got on the ticket in the first place (never mind if was completely above board), that I can’t even begin to imagine the supposed outrage if she were then “gifted” the office.
If Harris were to take over for Biden it would undermine everything Biden’s done in the last 4 months, be a pathetic consolation prize unworthy of Harris’s efforts to get elected, cripple whatever good the outgoing administration may be able to do before the shit is all over our country, and allow the GOP to pin every single thing that goes wrong in the next 4 years on Harris. If she ever runs again, it will be 24/7 “she was president for 2 months and all these things are her fault.” Even worse than the way they tried to tie every imagined and real issue with the Biden administration on Harris.
This is going to be a nitpick but the language we use is important:
Harris was always “on the ticket,” to the extent a ticket existed before the national convention. She just moved to the top. This bullshit about state parties not choosing Harris is a ridiculous narrative. Every state party who decided on Biden/Harris knew it was a possibility she’d be the nominee or president if anything happened to Biden. It is another minimization of her accomplishments.
Wow, I’m legit wondering what steps they expect POTUS to take in the face of…the will of the people / majority of voters.
This is just my opinion and I’m not in a place to argue or defend my position. I’m so tired. But I wanted to share.
There was so much hope and enthusiasm when Biden stepped down and Harris stepped up. But it drained away with every effort to appeal to the mostly mythical undecided voters and GOP never-Trumpers. Every step away from radical change and towards the status quo.
Harris was always working against misogyny and racism. But I believe she didn’t take that in the direction she needed to win. She ran a tight campaign. Almost perfect. Except she could never win with a conventional campaign. Never win with the electorate who voted in 2016 and 2020. She needed the people who couldn’t or hadn’t voted before. She needed the young voters and voters of color to turn out in droves. But there towards the end, it was all about the white GOP endorsements.
Harris needed to go hard left. Capture the attention and enthusiasm of people who weren’t showing up before.
Yes, of course. I apologize for my lack of clarity here. I originally wrote that very thing (moved to the top) but it got lost in various edits. All the hand-wringing about “she wasn’t a legitimate candidate” and so on was so exhausting to keep hearing, and so factually untrue.
No apologies needed, I know your heart is in the right place. I feel we are going to have to be so careful of the language we use and resist adopting the language used by MAGA. I’m sure I’ll mess it up too
Harris should have stood up for trans people. She should have stood up for Palestine. I have no idea if it would have helped her win, just it would have been the right thing to do.
