Elections 2023-2024

This was interesting:

This really struck me, so I imagined it as if it was on a t-shirt.

Here’s an incredibly quick and dirty mock-up (I also paraphrased it slightly):

It’s an utter mess of typography, and likely a crime against good design, but I still like the concept.

Did our early voting today, quite the line for mid-day midweek. Probably took an hour from start to finish.

First time that I remember no “I Voted” stickers. Must’ve been quite the turnout for them to be gone.

Generally speaking there is a little an individual president can do to single-handedly crash the economy… there are certainly policies they can embrace or have congress push through (massive tax cuts coupled with heavy spending, etc), but for the most part, presidents aren’t entirely responsible for the economy. It comes down more (often times) to who they appoint and the sort of policies they carry out.

I watched about half of it and honestly…I don’t think it was her best speech. But…I understand that particular speech was not aimed at me (I was committed to voting for her from the moment she became the official candidate, and I voted already), it was aimed at the people who haven’t yet decided whether or not to vote at all. I don’t think anyone is still trying to decide between Harris and Trump. I think the choices some people are still mulling are, “Do I not vote, or do I vote for Harris,” and “Do I not vote, or do I vote for Trump.” Those people don’t need a fiery motivational speech. They need a reason to do the right thing, and I think that speech was a good summary of the reasons to vote for her, or to at least not vote for Trump. I doubt it moves the needle much, though. Of course, after that MSG debacle of Trump’s, all she needed to do was not fuck up. She accomplished that.

I think what HCR said the other day is probably true… that that was the “october surprise”… the fact that the media (mostly) has pointed out what it actually was (a nazi rally) is encouraging, but also, why they fuck have they not been doing this shit since 2015…

Just… let’s not fuck this up, America.

I’ve actually been watching (a little bit at a time) that Mr. Beat video summarizing every US Presidential election, and it’s sort of simultaneously reassuring and horrifying. Reassuring in that we have actually kind of been here before, really, and we got through it. And horrifying because our elections have kind of always been a shit show. And horrifying to realize how close we have come multiple times in our history to fucking it up. Arguably, the only reason Lincoln got elected is because the pro slavery factions were divided and nominated three different people. There were also a number of Presidential elections with suspicious results. Hell, buying votes with booze was not only acceptable but damn near a requirement the first few elections.

So hopefully we make it through this. And when we do, we really need to look at some serious election reform. Getting rid of the electoral college is probably not realistic, but there are things the states can do to render it essentially ceremonial and tie it a lot more closely to the popular vote, like getting rid of winner take all for the entire state and going to what Nebraska and Maine do.

Speaking of H C Richardson, any thoughts on whether I should continue reposting her daily “Letters from an American” here? She posts them on FBook and SuS, two places many of us refuse to visit. (I’m on Fbook mostly to stay in touch with fam and friends.)

I’ve been reading them daily since Tromp’s insurrection, and I find her calm, detailed and informed approach both informative and reassuring. Others here might agree, and also might appreciate reading them here instead of on those two fountains of evil.

Please do. I feel icky going to SuS to read her.

There is another option.

As of April 15, 2024, the National Popular Vote bill has been enacted into law in 18 jurisdictions possessing 209 electoral votes, including

  • 6 small jurisdictions (District of Columbia, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont),
  • 9 medium-sized states (Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington), and
  • 3 big states (California, Illinois, New York).

The National Popular Vote bill will take effect when enacted into law by states possessing 270 electoral votes (a majority of the 538 electoral votes). The bill will take effect when enacted by states possessing an additional 61 electoral votes.

The National Popular Vote bill has also passed at least one legislative chamber in 7 states possessing 74 electoral votes (Arkansas, Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Oklahoma, Virginia). The bill has passed both houses of the Nevada legislature at various times. The National Popular Vote bill has been introduced all 50 states at various times. Overall, the National Popular Vote bill has now passed a total of 43 state legislative chambers in 24 states.

On the map below, each square represents one electoral vote (out of 538).

Not just more criticism, but insightful IMHO.

At least some polls are fraudulent:

Right? While many other polls are just, useless.

I mean, who answers unknown numbers on their phone anymore? And even among those who do respond to any sort of poll, how many are actually honest? How many are even sure yet who they’ll vote for once they finally fill in a ballot? (Rhetorical q’s, of course.)

I think the main point of polls is to garner clicks for corporate media.

Assholes. There’s a federal law against this, but they ignore it. There are verified citizens, even T**** supporters, being purged and they ignore that.

Come 2025, this court needs to be expanded. There is no other way to legitimize it short of removing 5 of the justices.

Just saw that. I have no words…

Fuuuuck!!

It’s been all too easy to almost forget that the The Majority there is hellbent on getting Tromp back in the White House.

The only solution for now seems to be a massive win by Harris. :grimacing:

Five? Who of the 6 that allowed that would you keep?

I might keep Roberts around just to torture him with being surrounded by liberal justices. :smiling_imp:
