Harris basically can’t win at this point. Even if she takes the rest of the blue wall states (which is looking less and less likely) the numbers just aren’t there with the remaining states.
Americans have decided they want their blood and soil and screw everybody else. It’s dark fucking times ahead.
Couldn’t sleep. Edibles doing nothing. I don’t know how to get through tomorrow, or any day from now on. This is the death of hope. It’s now been proven there won’t be any peaceful way out of our country’s fascism problem. So many people are going to die as a direct result of this abject failure of America’s voters.
I am guessing that, by this time on Election Night in 2020, it already looked better/less certain than it does right now? I know it took a few more days for it all to shake out 4 years ago (some friends of ours held an impromptu party when it did - in their front yard, of course, due to Covid)
It feels like watching someone you love get back together with their physically and psychologically abusive ex after barely making it out of the relationship alive the first time around.
The climate crisis is getting worse. And not only would another Trump admin continue to make this worse, it’s a sign that, at least with our current social structures, we’re not likely to stop making this worse.
The pandemic still isn’t over, and more will come. And if another Trump administration starts banning some vaccines, opposes masks, and opposes quarantines, more people will die. And i they round up millions of people, send them to camps awaiting deportation, with the crowding, inadequate shelter, inadequate sanitation, inadequate medical care, etc. will enable the spread of camp diseases.
Project 2025 would criminalize many of us, ban reproductive and gender-related health care, and censor everything.
It feels like a direct threat to the whole world, and a dead canary, at the same time.
I woke up less than an hour ago. Haven’t processed it yet.
I will say this: if it weren’t for you all, and for the few real-life friends I have from and in the US, my reaction would be: “fuck them all, they never learn, they get what they deserve”.
(Yes, I know that many didn’t vote for him and that there are scores of Americans in danger who fought tooth and nail against this, but I need to channel some of my despair into anger, and as I said, this would only be my reaction if I didn’t know people who are affected already (soon we will all be))
My family tree has people who fled France for Ireland during The Terror. Near as we can tell, they weren’t nobility of any kind. I’m guessing just people who were afraid of random state-driven brutality.
A few generations later, they left Ireland; the potato famine hit. To this day, Ireland’s population hasn’t recovered to pre-famine levels.
Really, I’m not sure what the take-away is, apart from “leaving trouble not of your making is pretty damn understandable.”
My only hope now is D’s flip the House and even that feels like a long shot right now. An R controlled Congress and R president would be the absolute worst case scenario.
So it’s obviously way too early for any kind of post-mortem, but seriously: what the fuck happened?
My foreign layman’s guess is “sexism is a much stronger force in US politics than anyone imagined”.
Obama got elected, twice, with strong numbers. So while racism is a big issue, Americans are willing to vote for a Black man for President. And Biden, a white man, won against Trump with convincing numbers.
Meanwhile Clinton, who was an experienced, capable, competent white woman, lost against Trump. And now Harris, who is an experienced, capable, competent Black woman, seems to have lost against Trump (who’s visibly in mental and physical decline, and has all the baggage of one of the most disastrous presidencies in American history).
I really get the feeling that it’s about sexism, that an awful lot of Americans are willing to vote for any man, no matter how obviously awful, over any woman… or just sit at home and refuse to do anything.
So far as I understand, coroners are elected because they’re the ones who can determine whether deaths were natural, suicide, or homicide, including in cases where people die in police custody. And in some areas, coroners can arrest the sheriff and/or take over the sheriff’s position, and might be the only person who has that authority.
So it’s considered a position of authority that should be accountable to the public and is therefore elected.
It does vary widely from one jurisdiction to another, and is controversial though. It’s a weird system with a lot of weird stories about things that have happened because of it.
From reading Golden Age detective fiction (and from what I know about the treasure trove process as an archaeologist) it appears to me that coroners in the UK are public officials similar to judges that preside over public inquests to determine the facts of a situation informed by stakeholders and experts; they’re not the medical examiners we see on American TV. I assume that in American counties with elected coroners, they have a similar role?
I had to get some sleep so when i woke up and saw this my stomach dropped in much the same way it did when stupid fucking idiots voted to take us out of the EU. I’m so sorry, for myself as well because we’re all going to pay the price.
