Elections 2023-2024

This exact thing has happened three times to me now. Twice in 2016, once now. Hey, at least there won’t be any future votes in the US to worry about, right?

America’s weird in that it varies widely by jurisdiction. And in some areas at least, they are like you describe.

The medical examiners, like you see on TV, are a different thing entirely - well, kind of. Some places have elected coroners, others have appointed professional medical examiners (with actual training and knowledge of forensics), and some have both.

Based on the stories I’ve read, in some places coroners are a counterpoint to the sheriff (checks and balances) and in other places they’re basically a former deputy who got elected to serve as kind of a puppet for the sheriff.

Can’t even like that! A reaction emoji, my kingdom for a reaction emoji!

I’ve left a heart, but this is a prime example of why we need more emojis for reactions. I really need the sweary red face right now >:E

I have many questions about this election, but I’ll skip the obvious one (WTF?!).

I wonder what turnout was like this time?

I expected it to be really high, given how politically-charged the U.S. has become over the last couple decades. And especially with the whole women’s healthcare issue being so big, as well as of course the general fascism thing. Apathy in the 90s I could understand, but not now. I wonder if that was actually a factor, and if so, why? But we probably won’t know for awhile.

My other big question would be whether this is even an accurate picture yet?

The last few elections have seen significant shifts after hours. With 54% and 73% of ballots cast by mail or early voting. Don’t know what that percentage is this time, but it’s probably still high. In the past, those weren’t necessarily counted in the election day reporting (which unfortunately supported the whole ruckus last time). The reporters don’t say this time however, have they actually accounted for that already, or can we expect to see states flip over the next few days and that we will not have even a reasonable estimate until Saturday again?

I’m really hoping they fucked up the reporting again :crossed_fingers:, even though that will suck when the reds get all upset and say “no, the news said we won!” again.

They really should fix that. Forbid any reporting until it’s all done and dusted and then tell us what happened.

Some of you lot from the Other Place may remember me saying where I work. At the moment I’m having to put up with Mike fucking Graham gloating about Trump’s victory and dumbass callers proclaiming the end of DEI.

Part of me wants to react in a knee-jerk fashion and blame all media outlets for this outcome, no matter if they’re on the left or right.
ALL of them will be descending on every inflammatory tweet and statement by this asshat for the next four years in an attempt to capitalise on hatred and ignorance.
It was in their best financial interest for Trump to win.

The cynical, nihilistic side of me always harboured a belief that the USA would never vote for a woman of colour, but I don’t want to believe that, as it paints a huge population as being hateful and bigoted, and I know people are generally more nuanced than that.

And the petty, vindictive side of me is disappointed with Keir Starmer kow-towing to Trump and offering congratulations instead of expressing horror. Realistically, I know there’s no way any leader of the country could say what they really think, as it would endanger critical international relationships.
But it still makes Starmer look like a fucking lickspittle.

Then there’s the side of me that looks at this as being a manifestation of the long-term goal of right-wing politicians worldwide: Reduce spending on public services, critically health and education, so that the voting population becomes more easily manipulated by populist rhetoric over time.

Ugh.

Take care all you happy mutants over there (that’s not reserved for the Other Place, is it?)

TBH, when Biden announced he was handing it over to Kamala, that was my first thought, and my wife’s as well - now we’re fucked. The Democrats are running a black woman against Trump?! That’s such a risky move.

But then we heard her speak, and she was so amazing! And then we saw her pick Walz and saw him speak too. And we thought, nah, they got this!

I still have this place listed as “Happy Mutants” in my password manager. I think that kinda nickname goes with the people, not the place.

Just woken up to this news.

Not this shit again.

Is there a word for deep, despairing disappointment in the collective stupidity and cruelty of humanity?

OMG, I hope all of those people who couldn’t vote for Harris because of Biden’s Isreal support spend every waking moment with the realization that any chance of stopping the genocide and eventual assimilation of Palestine and very possibly Lebanon is gone. Ukraine is fucked, women, PoC and LGBQTA+ people are fucked, my only hope is that as many of them as possible can find safety somewhere. To all the Americans here, my sincere condolences, I’m sorry so many of your fellow Americans are regressive pieces of shit.

I’m sure they will come up with some excuse why sitting idly by and letting things get worse somehow keeps their hands clean, and how that’s the really important thing. I wish them all the worst.

Edit: I mean, I’ve already seen some douchebag on Bluesky talking about how he will not blame anyone for refusing to support genocide, and that voting against fascism never works, and the only real solution is violence in the streets. I immediately blocked him, of course.

I’m worried that after this USA will forbid other countries from supporting Ukraine.

Congratulations, you’re now in the Alliance.

I made this. Share it widely, and good luck.

I don’t think they will forbid it, but they will stop their own support and probably lean heavily on “allies” to do the same. I don’t think the EU countries will stop. I can see the UK doing the lapdog thing again, but under a Labour government it’s less likely (then again Blair…).

The US will without a doubt leave NATO and that is what will put us in Europe in danger. I can see Putin using tactical nukes in Ukraine once the US has withdrawn its nuclear umbrella.

I fully expect that he will shortly get his wish. And I weep.

France and UK have nukes. And after this, I would not be surprised if Poland will go for them, too.

I know, but I do not believe they would use them in response to tactical strikes in Ukraine. And I do not believe that Putin believes they would. Not to mention the UK can’t use theirs without asking the Americans, and those are on Putin’s side.
