I don’t know regarding the UK; I mean, even that piece of shit De Pfeffel was fully behind Zelensky (about the only good thing I can say about him.)
Even the organisation I work for seems to be adamant in their support for Ukraine.
Remember, we’ve had quite a few, highly-publicised assassination attempts (successful and otherwise) by the Russians.
We’re closer to the front line and can see Putin for the tiny, vindictive psychopath he really is.
In European terms the UK is about as far away from the frontlines as you can be (excepting Ireland and Portugal, maybe). And I don’t think the support during the beginning of the invasion can be compared to the long haul we are in now. When the US withdraws, the UK will have to decide between angering a vindictive dictator and shouldering more of the burden, depressing its economy which will probably be in recession from tariffs anyway or finding an excuse to let the continent be the continent, as they have so many times before. I’m sorry, but I’m not in an optimistic mood right now.
We in the rest of the world cannot pretend to rely on the US any more.
We have to step up ourselves and stop making believe that if we leave it up to America, that things will just work out, probably.
We have to step up, and I have to believe that in the face of all the fascists, that we will. Even if we have to smack our own leaders (including Australia’s Albanese) upside the head and make it clear that congratulating Herr Chancellor Trump already is an act of historic cowardice, not pragmatism. Giving them the massive benefit of the doubt of assuming that they think it’s just pragmatism.
Please don’t. Somehow whenever there is a disaster people start looking for someone on the left to blame, as if the right did not exist. But this wasn’t because of a handful of voters trying to do the right thing in a stupid way, this is because of a vast number who wanted the wrong thing. People who wouldn’t for vote Harris because they liked what Trump stood for.
I hope he is right. I hope Il Douche comes up short in his efforts to destroy our democracy. Right now, i am tired and angry and frightened and sad. But as i say all the time,
