Elections 2023-2024

Where the armed forces come down on a political decision is, IMHO, usually the key factor for the outcome of a coup. I always think back to :cn: and Tiananmin Square in 1989 when it looked, if just for a moment, like the army was going to hesitate to attack its own people.

I’ve only known a couple of colonels in the :us: military, and I doubt they would carry out that order.

Interestingly enough, the German government has just collapsed a few minutes ago. The chancellor has dismissed the finance minister and leader of one of the parties they were in coalition with, and who has blocked everything the government wants to do.

Strangely enough, this is the first thing today that has given me hope. Chancellor Scholz has given a very statesmanlike speech announcing the end of his cabinet (it will still go on as a minority government at least until January) and he explicitly said that he didn’t want Germany to become like the US. I hope that the timing of this decision really impresses the parallels to the failed state USA on the voters and that it heals the divisions to some degree. I think it might, actually. Maybe Germans needed that shock to the system.

Not as long as Eric Adams and Kathy Hochul are in charge. Hell, Adams probably voted for Trump. He’s just as corrupt.

Maybe so, but putting a fascist in charge of one of the central pillars of the NATO structure isn’t the way to get change, not without catastrophically destroying everything else. Two things can be true… we can understand that NATO (and the entire postwar interstate system) is highly problematic and that US pulling out when there is a war in Europe is catastrophic. :woman_shrugging:

I hope so. I think that’s our only choice. Even if we leave the country, America has a global reach.

Seems better than what we have right now…

It’s not either-or, though… The enlightenment gained insight from violent, genocidal colonialism and the horrors of chattel slavery. Some of the most incredible art of interwar period was created in the darkness of the rise of fascism. Punk and hip-hop evolved along side Watergate, stagflation, and the Reagan revolution… The reality is that we always create, because that is what makes us human.

Shoe could be on the other foot there… Vance is Thiel’s pawn.

Undoubtedly. Fascism is the political organizing of bullies.

Just like 2016.

It also fails to acknowledge that this observation cuts both ways: half of voting Americans knew exactly who Turnip was and voted for him anyway. Resist, sure, but be aware that the folks on the other side are explicitly on the authoritarian side.

“There were no major issues across the state” in the election process, said Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar.

In the state, however, an issue with ballot signatures emerged among young voters – many of them do not know how to sign their name, Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar told CNN.

State officials are urgently reaching out to a large number of young voters to confirm their signatures so their votes can be counted. But officials say many teenagers and young adults in their 20s only know how to sign their names electronically.

“What we’re finding is there’s a lot of younger people who have a signature issue because they live in a digital world, they haven’t used a real signature in real life,” said Aguilar.

There was a great article back when Trump first ran for office about how the main goal of his run was to get access to all the data for the Republican party members so he could grift them. It talked about this sophisticated mill they had to pump them through Facebook and other sites to buy his stuff and microtargeting them using all that information he got access to just by being a candidate.

They will make a diplomatic exception for the President of the United States. Everyone also needs to accept that all of the federal cases against Trump are now dead. Jack Smith is probably updating his resume right now, and reaching out to various Big Law firms. The Justice Department will experience a near total house cleaning in January. This will throw all federal prosecutions into limbo. The one good part about that is it will delay his ability to try to prosecute his enemies.
