What a picture. From election night, apparently.
Tuesday’s widespread embrace of fascism seems less surprising when you consider that we have the highest rates of incarceration of any society in the history of mankind, and yet politicians and private citizens alike are constantly, publicly outraged that we don’t put more people in jail.
Good point, though of course I’m also outraged about the criminals who by and large don’t go to prison-- the wealthy ones, with Tromp now topping that list.
I read something yesterday about some of the mail-in ballots that needed to be fixed before they could be counted. Apparently many young first time voters don’t know how to sign their names because they only ever digitally sign things.
The concerns of Trump voters are that women are getting abortions and taking positions in society that should belong to men and subverting society by sacrificing the presidency to a female foreigner who has dictator like power (remember they know the president is all powerful now too). They believe all who support her do so because they hate America.
These were always their concerns. I’m from here. These were their concerns.
A stupid, fearful populace is WAY easier to control.
The brutal, primitive parts of your brain fire a lot faster and earlier than your rational, thinking parts.
With any luck, the US can start a tradition we have had for a while here in Illinois. You move from the Governor’s house to the Big House.
Looking back, I can say from the Detroit Public School system and my home that I got a pretty good education. Even though all the history was wrong but of course, it takes fucking decades for that to come out apparently. (after wwii, the german history books went from willie II to adenauer, like nothing happened in between). I’d say up to the end of the Carter Administration things were okay. And then…the REAL dumbing down of the USA began. But I was lucky, despite the emotional/mental abuse I went through; learning to read and then getting a library card was just another step toward…GROWING UP!
Also, it’s bloody fucking difficult to fucking listen and learn and do when you’re fucking hungry as hell and had to stay up and take care of your baby sib/s cos parent/s were working night and day shifts just to put food on the table and all the wonderful stuff the privileged upper class doesn’t have to worry about. Can’t have a man in the house - that started in the 1930s! If dad comes 'round at all.
breathing…ok…i get myself started and get all worked up. I could on and on. Short version: Class struggle.
You move from the Governor’s house to the Big House.
Fingers crossed that Pritzker’s wealth has inoculated him from the temptations that have led previous governors to the Big House.
I mean, I was joking, but of course NPR does occupy the same niche as conservative talk radio for its audience. It reinforces their worldview and provides the kind of entertainment they want.
Gee, it’s almost like women, especially Black women are put into an impossible position with unreasonable demands… But nah… it’s just them darn liburals once again… how DARE they embrace human rights over the “economic anxiety” of white men!!! /s
I’m sorry…
I made that point above and got explained how I was wrong… Funny that.
Right? As I typed that, I knew that I was walking into that.
He’s got some issues in his past - he was contacted by Blago to buy Obama’s seat (he turned it down, but was interested in being Treasurer), and some other minor shenanigans, but so far, nothing about him abusing government power.
That’s easy to say from a position where one is under minimal risk.
Many of us here are not in such an advantageous position.
Lots of us will have our lives completely uprooted and destroyed, for sure… and we don’t know how bad it’s going to be, but some here have a larger measure of insulation than others (myself included, being a white, middle class woman)… But I really don’t feel like dismissing the upset and grief people are feeling is particularly helpful, although I’m sure that wasn’t the intent… but that’s certainly how it came off…
I’m also remembering in 2016, how when he got elected the first time, and lots of people were highly upset, and we got told that it was going to be bad, sure, but we’ve had bad presidents before… thing is, WE WERE FUCKING RIGHT ABOUT HOW BAD THINGS WERE GONNA GET… I feel like some of that same thing is happening again. That and people just pinning the blame solely on the democratic party, AGAIN…
To be frank, it was even worse than I’d ever expected.
I am not sure that I or anyone else who’s imperiled can survive another four years of even worse fuckery than the last time.
What I do know is that I will never forgive those who actively voted for fascism, and if we end up on Fury fucking Road as survivors, I will not forget “who killed the world…” Or who enabled it.
But what do we build? Do we keep tending our gardens, or do we start erecting walls and digging escape tunnels? The answer is not simple or the same for everyone.
For people who wish to discuss their own plans for coping and surviving, I started a new thread…
Seems like it’ll be needed.
No problem, i wasn’t being sarcastic or implying you erroneously left something out. I think his billions itself do make Pritzker suspect, but I just meant that a sort of ironic effect of that wealth is that he has little financial reason to pursue the relatively small potatoes to be gained from corruption as a governor.
My condolences and deepest sympathies for your loss.
