Elections 2023-2024

Isn’t that just NPR?

Ha, not to me. I hate NPR, because overall, it strikes me as fundamentally conservative. It’s soothing fodder for “educated” white liberals. A recent example for me is the refusal of its pleasant-voiced announcers and interviewerers to call what’s happening to Palestinians what it is-- genocide. Let alone to point out how US tax dollars support it, or the many ways that Israel is an apartheid state.

If mom hadn’t died in January, she’d still be cursing. “How could they let that man get back in? Why isn’t he in jail?!”

My inlaws, naturalized Mexican immigrants with a very strong Catholic background, would vote GOP if it wasn’t for their anti-immigrant rhetoric. It’s the only reason most of them (2 didn’t, that I know of, and VERY proud of it) vote GOP.

I have a trans nephew and a lesbian niece. Both of them are far happier now that they are out than they ever were before. The niece is happily married and raising her kids. The nephew…I honestly don’t remember seeing him smile before, but he does now. I’m pretty sure I have at least one other niece/nephew as well who won’t quite fit into what they consider “normal”.

I mentioned to a few of them yesterday that the GOP wants to declare them illegal. And the illegal immigrant friends they have would be shipped off, and not in a nice way. They’re not as cheery anymore. I cannot understand their lack of empathy until it impacts them, but it is their unifying feature. We generally don’t get along - some of it stemming from when they said “the Bible says” and then I quoted parts back that said the opposite, because unlike them I have actually read it - but I don’t think they’re really ready to feel the pain. But they probably need to to truly understand.

I hope that my state is able to keep them safe, but if I need to I will do what I need to to protect these family members who don’t fit into the little boxes the GOP has set.

NPR tries to be neutral.

Yeah, It is a song I am familiar with as a queer teen of the early 80s. It’s Anita Bryant but multiplied and all with megaphones on social media. It’s the same damn song.

That was a nicely-done FAFO on the part of that company president. Gets the point across in a visceral fashion.

Good summation and advice. First, take care of yourself, second, take care of each other, third, take care of the country.

Tracking vote totals with this morning’s updates: 143M vs 2020’s 158M, with California reporting 55% and Oregon & Washington reporting ~70%.

The gap at this snapshot in time is 15 million votes.

If totals from California match 2020, we can expect another 7.8M votes.
Oregon is reporting 77%, so if totals from 2020 carry over, we can expect another 546 thousand.
Washington is reporting 79%, so we can expect another 850 thousand.
Arizona has 69% reporting, so we can expect another million votes.
Colorado is at 77% reporting, so expect another million votes there.
New Jersey is at 93%, so another 300k expected.

Every other state is either tiny or at fully reported.

Total: 11.3M more expected votes.

I have a meeting with my boss today, and that’s essentially what I’m going to tell him, because I can pretty much guarantee that prices for what we buy (servers, switches, etc.) are going to go WAY up with those tariffs.

And I should probably start buying the parts of my new desktop sooner rather than later for the same reason.

On a positive note: my state got a pretty resounding message from it’s population regarding the constitutional amendments that would have given the legislature more control, AND we passed an amendment to guarantee abortion rights. (Arizona)

ZERO liberal tears

Um, I think giving in to “liberal tears” is fine, at least for awhile. I see no problem with feeling and openly expressing our sorrow, grief and fear.

I’ve been sad to watch methods from the supremacist playbook used on other marginalized groups. Lately they’ve been coming for impoverished and homeless people, too. Musk’s proposals will ensure more people fall into those two groups, and they’ve got a whole system already in place to incarcerate and exploit the victims of their economic plans.

Yup

They don’t try hard enough.

The Q&A part of Jimmy Kimmel’s show almost made me ill:

Glad they saw the light. Part of a huge problem is treating people from different countries and cultures as a monolith. We also cannot overlook the issue of ladder-pullers among citizen here, either.

Mine missed his first term, too, but after seeing how he “managed” casinos while we worked in Atlantic City, I find comfort in thinking she didn’t see what’s become of America. We knew back then what TFG was capable of (along with his incompetence). So seeing the worst example of mediocrity failing upwards in my lifetime succeeding twice is why I’m right there with Desi Lydic this morning.

The advice is sound, but the title “ZERO liberal tears” isn’t entirely helpful. Sometimes tears are a perfectly appropriate response to a terrible development even if we still intend to step up and fight back.

That’s the “Take care of yourself” part. I had my share of tears. But we can’t stop at that stage. I can’t stop at that stage, anyway.

So take that look out of here it doesn’t fit you
Because it’s happened doesn’t mean you’ve been discarded
Pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming
Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted
I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered
But you can’t stay here with every single hope you had shattered, see ya
I’m not expecting to grow flowers in a desert
But I can live and breathe
And see the sun in wintertime
In a big country dreams stay with you
Like a lover’s voice fires the mountainside
Stay alive

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, Elissa Slotkin won over Mike Rogers here in MI for US Senate.

And I’m glad I live in MI, even though there’s people who prolly still think getting rid of Big Gretch is a good idea. I’m kinda worried about John James in the US House, though.

I get knee deep into these overlong pieces about how voters are making complicated voting decisions about “the economy” or “inflation” and they NEVER mention stuff like the fact that 54% of the U.S. operates at a 6th grade reading level, or their news and information diet is raw sewage
