Stop Pretending Trump is Not Who We Are

by Carlos Lozada

I remember when Donald Trump was not normal.

I remember when Trump was a fever that would break.

I remember when Trump was running as a joke.

I remember when Trump was best covered in the entertainment section.

I remember when Trump would never become the Republican nominee.

I remember when Trump couldn’t win the general election.

I remember when Trump’s attacks on John McCain were disqualifying.

I remember when Trump’s “Access Hollywood” tape would force him out.

I remember when Trump was James Comey’s fault.

I remember when Trump was the news media’s fault.

I remember when Trump won because Hillary Clinton was unlikable.

I remember when 2016 was a fluke.

I remember when the office of the presidency would temper Trump.

I remember when the adults in the room would contain him.

I remember when the Ukraine phone call went too far.

I remember when Trump learned his lesson after the first impeachment.

I remember when Jan. 6 would be the end of Trump’s political career.

I remember when the 2022 midterms meant the country was moving on.

I remember when Trump’s indictments would give voters pause.

I remember when Trump’s felony convictions would give voters pause.

I remember when Trump would win because Joe Biden was old.

I remember when Kamala Harris’s joy would overpower Trump’s fearmongering.

I remember when Trump was weird.

I remember when Trump was not who we are.

I’m so tired of being told I should try and find common ground with people whose desire is to put me in the ground.

I went through my social media last night and removed every single person who supports republican or Canadian Conservative party policies, no matter the relationship. If they vote to make me illegal, they don’t get access to me or my life.

Oh, so now the Grey Lady has the “resist Trump normalization” content. Thanks, traitors.

The Daily Show had a segment yesterday showing how every pundit seems to have an opinion on just how the Harris campaign screwed up—but for every criticism you can find other pundits arguing the exact opposite.

She should have distanced herself from the unpopular Biden administration / She should have loudly embraced the accomplishments of the Biden administration.

She should have shown more commitment to Israel / She should have rallied the base by supporting the plight of the Palestinians.

She should have talked more about policy specifics / she should have worked to connect with voters on an emotional level instead of getting bogged down in technocratic details.

In short, she would have had this thing if only she’d done a couple dozen mutually exclusive things!

Seriously, screw all these pundits. They’re even more useless than the pollsters.

Thr term “Monday morning quarterbacking” comes to mind, even though I hate football.

I hope the conversation moves quickly to how horrible Tromp and Co. are, and how to resist their upcoming predations, and maybe even how to FINALLY call that fascist shit out for what it is.

The same thing happened when Trump defeated Hillary in 2016. Oddly enough, no one seemed to blame the Republicans for running a bad campaign when Biden won in 2020 though. Instead, it was accepted as a given that the American electorate was tired of Trump and wanted to move on.

Democrats are the only ones who are ever assumed to have any agency.

What is boils down to is understating how much hate there is for women and people of color across the board. On top of people doing the whole “But he is only going to take care of the criminals and I’m not a criminal”. Seeing the anti-slavery prop die while the gay marriage prop succeed in CA just shows on social topics people are just wanting revenge on people they see is criminal.

We all know “Criminal” is a sliding scale that can apply to anybody given the biggest criminal is the guy being voted for. It is always hate on marginalized people with lip service to “Crime” while just being all weaponized disgust.

Well, Fuck.

My husband died in feb and the only sardonic thought I had was “Well, At least HE doesn’t have to experience this.”

Worst timeline.

Today, millions of people woke up to see the problem of a broken information ecosystem that asymmetrically favors anti-democratic & authoritarian emotions, narratives, actors and movements.

Some suggest to fight fire with fire, build a left-leaning influence machine against the rightwing one…

There are three factions of the new york times.

headline writers-- who theoretically generate clickthroughs, but most often genereate screenshots
straight news-- who give their subjects enough rope to do as they please
opinion-- who will give it to you straight-- if they feel like it.

Exactly, and a great, clarifying way to put it.

One of many despairing, frightened thoughts I’ve been having stems from memories of assholes confronting and threatening LGBTQ+ people, and those who express any support for them, with the accusation that they’re “groomers.”

That accusation, with its implicit aim of protecting children, always chilled me because it also implies violence. And now, those hateful, self-righteous people are emboldened. It’s just one way that so many people are going to get hurt, and killed.

I remember when progressives tried to make a left-wing counterpart to conservative talk radio during the GWB administration. They had big names like Thom Hartmann and Al Franken and Rachel Maddow behind it.

I gave it a try but frankly it kind of sucked. The format isn’t conducive to thoughtful in-depth analysis, which is a big part of the reason why talk radio tends to be so conservative in the first place. It’s built for outrage, not nuance.

Progressives’ strengths are not Conservatives’ strengths, and if we try to beat them at their own game we will lose.

Isn’t that just NPR?

NPR is mostly thoughtful, longer-form content and analysis. Air America Radio was more like “what if we adopted the Rush Limbaugh/Glenn Beck outrage radio format but with progressives instead of conservatives?”

What I really like about Rachel Maddow’s subsequent projects in television, podcasts and books is that they give her a chance to shine where she’s at her strongest: building a comprehensive, well-researched historical case for a point of view over many minutes or hours. The AM talk radio format depends on hooking a listener mid-program while they’re driving to work and immediately getting them angry enough to keep listening.
