Elections 2025-2026

  1. The National Republican Senatorial Committee says Apple’s iOS 26, which is slated to be released in September, could cost them tens of millions of dollars in lost fundraising and also impact get-out-the-vote organizing opportunities.

(Before you get excited, keep reading)

  1. The reason: iOS 26 includes significant message filtering features, so texts from political campaigns and committees will get filtered out into an unknown folder.

It’s fair to say Democratic committees and candidates will be impacted by this too.

  1. The NRSC says 70% of small-dollar donations come from text messages now, so this could end up costing the GOP over $500 million in lost fundraising.

I get at least so many unsolicited political spam calls each day that I accidentally denied a call from my dentist last week.

So to the polical fundraisers:

HCR explained the Texas shenanigans well last night:

I remember them doing this 10? 12? years ago. Can’t remember how it turned out. If the delay pissed off the TxGOP, well, that’s something…

They did it in 2003, again over a redistricting plan. They fled to Oklahoma. Then governor Rick Perry issued arrest warrants and sent the Texas Rangers (not the baseball team) after them. They returned before getting arrested, but they successfully delayed the vote. Perry then called a special session, the Democrats fled again, this time to New Mexico, and again were threatened with arrest. One of them blinked, returned to Texas, and that redistricting plan passed.

@gyrofrog
Like @danimagoo said, it delayed but didn’t stop another awful redistricting.

Texas Tribune usually has solid coverage on Texas politics. I also appreciate how, whenever they cover the latest MAGA BS on gender transition healthcare, the TT makes sure to mention it’s the best standard of care.

They have an article about this tactic being used before

Ok. This is driving me nuts too now. Not only are too many outlets repeating the lie that Abbott can just remove legislators, a place that is usually really good says this

He cited a nonbinding 2021 legal opinion from Attorney General Ken Paxton, who said it would be up to a court to decide whether a lawmaker who had left the state to deny quorum had forfeited their office. If a court were to decide that the legislators had vacated their offices, Abbott would be permitted to fill those seats with appointees of his choosing, Paxton’s opinion stated.

The opinion doesn’t say that! In fact, it only mentions the governor in the into paragraph.

The Texas constitution lays out how a legislative vacancy is filled. It has to be by special election. The governor is the one responsible for calling the special election. But that’s it.

Where is this BS coming from? Are they mixing up vacancies in the TX Supreme Court with legislature?
Abbott can appoint to a vacancy in the SCoT. It’s a tactic he gets his allies on the court to use. They will run, win, and then take their planned retirement like 6 months later

Honestly I wish someone would write a letter to the editor about this then because it’s very misleading.

I remember at the time there was a segment on an episode of The Daily Show titled “Runaways” where they tracked down and interviewed some of these lawmakers hiding out in Oklahoma, with the reporters acting as if they were talking to teenagers who had fled abusive homes. At one point a reporter held up a pillow shaped like the state of texas and said “show me where they tried to redistrict you” in the same manner of a social worker using a doll when talking to a young survivor of sexual abuse.

So probably not The Daily Show’s finest moment.

Ugh… maybe that at least means she’s not keeping her seat in Congress?
