Do you begrudgingly use Windows or do you use Linux or something else?
Is there any other way?
To be honest, I can’t think of an operating system I’ve used that I haven’t begrudged.
I use MacOS and Linux.
I bought a Windows laptop, since it should be easier to take if there’s a fire or … other immediate emergency.
I got Mint running in VirtualBox, but it’s awkward. If I can get Windows working in Windows, and Firefox working in Windows, then I might try some wsl-integration tools which are supposed to get Linux apps to work more smoothly in Windows, and get a decent desktop environment in Windows without Virtualbox.
I just tested and it is working for me. I got my profile path from about:support
and put userChrome.css
and userContent.css
in there under the chrome
folder. The complete path is
C:\Users\brian\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\paud0g0p.default-release\chrome
Turned on the flag and restarted FF.
Okay. There were 2 different account folders, with the same name, at different locations.
I just set up wsl a few weeks ago, my first shot at using WSL2. It’s a piece of cake, didn’t take much time at all, and everything worked pretty well. I still don’t know how to keep it running without a terminal for when I feel like having servers there, but I’m not really worrying about that now.
I did something blasphemous / heretical just because I could. I installed the clone of the XP pinball game and played it. Running on Linux, displayed on Windows of a classic Windows game just felt wrong .
This is funny, but I also wish it hadn’t been made because I’m afraid it will give stores some ideas.
I wonder what the stats are for viewership these days? I personally found Amazon Prime to be unwatchable with the increase in ads and have stopped using it.
Amazon has increased the number of ads or “ad load” in Prime Video to four-to-six minutes of ads per hour
As a reminder, a few years ago Amazon Prime cost $100 a year and had zero minutes of ads per hour.
Now it costs $150 a year and has 6 minutes of ad load per hour.
The ad load on traditional television “typically ranges from 13 to 16 minutes per hour.”
After dumping Prime and my wish lists / usual purchases for the boycott, I’m curious about that, too. Unlike Target, I hear a lot of people are still using them because of convenience. Target used to be my Amazon backup, but now my retail purchases are very limited (mostly gift cards). My account is still active, because I didn’t want them to nuke my device / delete my downloaded ebooks. Most of what I watch is on YT.
The article is new, but the issue they’re describing is from January 2025
BambuLabs more or less “fixed” the issue by allowing the end user to set the printer in “hacker mode”, which disables access to cloud, but enables internal comms (without needing to use a specific bambulab application).
Usually dystopias aren’t self-inflicted. Be a little smarter in the future.
I shudder to think what will happen if they take your advice and read a book, only to discover the app has been fixed…and the AI is familiar with Fahrenheit 451.
Maybe AI is experimenting with cryogenics? That guy probably should have read the fine print.
