Enshittification

I still use Ublock Origin. Works well for me on youtube. Every time I try to watch something on some other system though, like casting it to TV from my phone, or watching on someone else’s system, I am astounded at how incredibly bad that experience is and why anyone would ever do that.

Sure, we grew up with commercial breaks on broadcast television, but they didn’t interrupt the middle of a 3 minute music video to give you 5 minutes of ads. I’ve even seen someone leave a playlist running and get a 20 minute ad mixed in there.

YouTube Revanced makes YouTube functional once again on an Android phone- it’s the only way I’d ever use it on mobile these days. Unfortunately I don’t think it works on iPhones.

I’ve used that app before, it works though i thought that it had stopped being updated. Maybe i’m thinking of the Vanced app.

I just recently updated mine, so can confirm it’s still active and working for the moment!

I just posted this on Tumblr this week,

We can now confirm that BBC Sounds will close for listeners based outside the UK on 21 July 2025.

At least:

For listeners outside the UK interested in ongoing access to the BBC radio stations following the closure, we’ve added a directory below that will allow for live listening to all of our BBC radio stations. This includes the BBC’s music stations – BBC Radio 1, Radio 2, and Radio 3, 6Music, 1Xtra and Asian Network, Radio 4Xtra and 5Live, all the BBC’s stations from the UK nations and every local radio station in England.

Of course this won’t be much of use for me as I mostly listen to Radio 4 Extra shows when I try to sleep.

Hope a VPN or something can fix this. Been using BBC radio comedy as sleep aid for almost 20 years.

First thought I have is setting up a computer to record bits of the live stream or something…

A VPN should work.

Possible alternative: BFBS. Yes, they have The Archers.

Yeah, I’m not looking forward to it. It’s Sunday evening so I might be listening to Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone shortly. I listen to their dramas (or podcasts as people call them now) and documentaries (or podcasts as people call them now) a fair bit too.

Won’t miss the relentless Small Boat News though.

Might i recommend NewPipe? Changes to YTube often break it but it’s frequently updated to route around whatever latest fuckery G are trying to implement. Great little app when it works though.

Anyone who lives in the UK will still be able to use the BBC Sounds app when they go on holiday abroad.

This makes me wonder…

This result for @KathyPartdeux may be linked.

What is the BBC World Service like these days?

Can you get Test Match Special?

I have a UK BBC login (from NI postcode) but the iplayer wont work on that. But maybe they will just allow the login for the Sounds player?

I’m far for my computer but really hope this works…

Use of get_iplayer outside the UK is not supported, with the exception of downloading lower-quality (96k and 48k) radio programmes that are available to international users. Do not ask for help downloading TV programmes or higher-quality (320k and 128k) radio programmes from outside the UK. Do not discuss methods to circumvent BBC geoblocking in get_iplayer forums. It doesn’t matter what VPN/VPS/proxy you use - you may find yourself blocked by the BBC, and get_iplayer can do nothing about it.

So likely not… But still

Wow, what awful AI slop. Absolutely pathetic.

But expected in MS’s culture. They have been told to prepare their reviews of their work with copilot, their managers have been told to evaluate their employee reviews with copilot and write their reports with copilot.

That’s a whole lot of nobody saying anything which is supposed to be how they find out what is going on in their company.

But we do: the people hiring the head of graphics only have access to early ‘90s quality Word clip art created by AI.

Microsoft is fucked.

I pay for Premium, 'cos I use it for all my music listening these days; but even then, I still use SponsorBlock when watching on Firefox.
While you don’t get “traditional” ads with Premium, you still get the embedded sponsor bollocks a lot of YouTubers stick in their videos, and SponsorBlock removes these.

It’s really annoying when I then watch YouTube one one of my Google screens which don’t have SponsorBlock, such as the Hub Max I have in the kitchen, as that doesn’t block sponsor content.

What’s even more irritating is that most, if not all of the sponsors are often completely irrelevant and unavailable in my territory anyway.
