The classic I know is The Case for the Empire in the Washington Examiner, where Jonathan Last waves off blowing up a planet full of civilians and talks about the importance of stability:
Make no mistake, as emperor, Palpatine is a dictator–but a relatively benign one, like Pinochet. It’s a dictatorship people can do business with.
That’s actually his example of a good guy! It’s sickening.
Screenshots here of an amazing exchange on X. Axios reporter Alex Thompson’s new book on Biden claims (with no sources) that Biden shook DNC chair Jaime Harrison’s hand without recognizing him. Harrison posts “it never happened”. Then Axios editor Jake Wilkins - wow - tells Harrison he’s wrong! 1/
Here’s the reason this is coming up now. Jordan Klepper on The Daily Show gave a great example of how the press sanewashes . Every time he’s done this, stories are published insisting Biden’s speech patterns were a symptom of serious cognitive decline. Since they offer no proof, only vague hearsay, conspiracy theorists spread it along with GOP supporters/Biden bashers. All in an effort to bothsides public appearances like this:
Right? I mean who cares at this point. Should it be any surprise that Biden was old and forgetful? Do people really think that the President does everything in a vacuum or is an island? This is why the west wing is (theoretically) staffed with experts in their respective area to be able to help the President make decisions. This is why the President has an entire cabinet to actually do the business of running things. The buck is supposed to stop with the President, not start with the President.
Just because Trump is busy impulsively chasing every single shiny object and knucklehead grievance he can and only listening to whomever the last person in the room, that’s not how it’s supposed to work but it gives the impression that this is normal. It’s not normal and it’s not supposed to work.
So, again, who cares? I was as shocked as anybody when Biden dropped out of the race, but like pretty much everybody else, I quickly moved on when Harris was named successor. It seems like the vast majority of people complaining about “but but there was no primary” or “but but Biden puppet presidency” and any other related nonsense are all Trump simps anyway and I couldn’t give a fuck about what they think.
Moreover, what more do they want? He did step aside after that terrible debate performance and the media howling for months about his age (while, as always, giving Trump a free pass). People said he was too old, he dropped out of the race to give the chance to someone younger. Do people really think he needed to stop being President a few months early on top of that? What exactly did he do as a result of his old age that was so devastating and could have been prevented?
Republicans still can’t decide if he was a puppet president that was literally dead for 4 years and the country was actually being run by a secret cabal, or if he was the worst president in history that single handedly ran the country into the ground. You can’t have it both ways.
Meanwhile Trump can’t string two thoughts together and won’t stop talking about how groceries are this amazing concept that he is learning about for the first time, and says that he doesn’t know if he needs to follow the constitution. That’s perfectly fine for those same republicans as long as they get their tax cuts and own the libs in the process.
