European online friends freaked TF out when I told them we need a wardrobe for all four seasons. Most of them only had the jacket or shorts seasons, too. They freaked even harder when I told them how cold and how hot it gets here…and that was during the 90s, when the climate weirdness was only just starting to get obvious.

I’ll never forget the kids hanging out next door that one late 90s/early oughties New Year’s Day, playing basketball in t-shirts, while I sat at our computar machine next to an open window.

In St. Louis they inevitably begin road construction projects RIGHT BEFORE WINTER. So things are torn up and lanes closed, and then no progress is made for months.

On the topic of weather/seasons, the lyrics of “Iowa Stubborn” always come to mind:

We can be cold
As our falling thermometers in December
If you ask about our weather in July

:grimacing:

:astonished: I’ve never had a cat who wasn’t more afraid of spiders than I am! They would come find me, meow in distress, lead me to the creepy crawlers*, and give me a “handle it” expression…like Lumbergh:

*Apologies to those who like them, but I only liked Charlotte…until her kids arrived! :scream:

I gad a fluffy tuxedo cat who loved munching on Daddy Longlegs. So gross.

Did Kitty eat the legs as well, or were they abandoned on the floor for you to discover later?

Years ago I lived in an older (early 1900s bungalow) rental house with a dirt basement, and camel crickets would scootch under the door into the house. The cats would patrol the hallway for them—toy and snack in one convenient package—but none would eat the legs. I would find them on the floor, sometimes in unexpected places, and that’s still a gives-me-the-icks memory.

No she ate the legs, too, but it was unnerving to watch. ::shudder::

In Chicago, we say: winter and construction. (means the same thing)

I remember when that was true around here…

Talked with our next door neighbor later that New Year’s Day. Said it was nice having the windows open, but also scary AF, and he agreed to both. We talked about the winters during our childhoods, when we’d get 2-3 feet of snow what stuck around until late Feb at the earliest, and it rarely went below 0℉.

We also talked about how it never reached 90℉ during summer when we were kids.
