Been playing a lot of Superhot lately, and the (in development) sequel Superhot: Mind Control Delete. It’s repetitive now that I’ve already plowed through all the levels, but good for some mindless fun when I don’t want to get sucked into a new story or have to remember where I was in a story. Jump in for a bit, blast red dudes until I either beat a level or get killed, then go back to doing whatever. The half twitch shooter / half chess game nature of it keeps drawing me back in.
It is in early access from the look of it - I got it due to backing the original, so I’m not certain on availability.
It’s definitely still in flux. The levels themselves seem to be pretty set, but they are playing around with how you progress through them. Rather than individual levels that you select, you move through what’s essentially a difficulty tree where each stop either unlocks gameplay changes or puts you through a random set of levels. They recently made a big change to the structure of that difficulty tree, adding in a little bit of story (though not a whole lot yet) and some features/challenges that can randomly appear in the levels.
The biggest thing is that it’s a lot more random than the first one, you don’t play through pre-set levels any more (though that might make a comeback later, who knows). Instead, finishing a level means killing a percentage of enemies that enter the level at various times with random weaponry, so it’s a lot more chaotic.
Heh. I got frustrated with the original one at the elevator level months ago, but Mrs. Crashproof is usually the one to refer to [food, weather, people etc.] as “SUPER. HOT. SUPER. HOT.”
That’s… an interesting thing to describe it as.
Is this worth playing? It’s on sale now.

The remastered day of the tentacle and grimm fandango are also very cheap.
Thimbleweed Park is great - a total love letter to both the genre and 1990s nerd culture. It’s just over entirely too soon.
Fortnite has a PvE mode called Save The World that is actually the original form of the game. It is a very, very different game from what all the kids are talking about, which is Battle Royale and started out as an experiment before blowing up to become the biggest game in the world. Save The World is not currently free, but the entry fee is not excessive and it frequently goes on sale. They’ve also recently made some significant changes to hero loadouts and progression that make things a bit easier to manage. As a bonus, it’s a good way to earn V-Bucks which can be used in either mode, so I subsidize buying battle passes by playing STW. I like the co-op nature of it, plus the base building and scavenging. It’s pretty much unlike anything else I’ve played.
On the PvP side, there are multiple variants to Battle Royale that don’t require you to play high-level Tetris with building in order to be successful. I tend to favor Team Rumble which is 20v20 with 4 person squads. It’s first team to 100 eliminations, and there’s respawning, so it’s much lower stakes and it gives you quite a bit of freedom to explore the island and work on battle pass challenges. There are also limited time modes that can be a lot of fun and aren’t quite as high pressure as solo BR.
I wouldn’t even want to estimate how much time I’ve spent playing Fortnite.
Slime Rancher is free on the Epic Games Store for a limited time. It’s fucking delightful life simulator and well worth sinking time into.
Slime Rancher is a great game, but it also seems to have been made without the traditional development death march:
Any suggestions for good 1-on-1 roleplaying campaigns or systems?
Co-Op:
-
The Quiet Year is a post-Apocalyptic community-building game, was recently on the Bundle of Holding.
-
Really ought to finish Temple of Elemental Evil.
-
Arkham Investigations is pure investigation.
-
Tom Pigeon’s Mythic is supposed to be good as a co-op. Not to be confused with the neo-Nazi game of the same title.
-
Blade and Lockpick is also supposed to work as a co-op.
One player, one character, one gamemaster:
-
Cthulhu Confidential and its relatives which are almost pure investigation.
-
I can’t find any one-on-one adventures for Savage Worlds. There are also options for having one super-powered character play party-balanced campaigns, but I’d rather avoid super-powered characters.
-
There are a couple series of one-on-one adventures for Pathfinder, but I don’t like Pathfinder or other class-level games. There are also Scarlet Heroes rules, but again.
-
P.S. There are also several classic Star Wars adventures!
One player, several characters, one gamemaster:
-
There is Blade and Lockpick. I’m not sure how well it works for adventures written for other systems.
-
There are the Avalon Quest rules and adventures for Pathfinder.
This is nice to hear.
Android users can now pre-register for Niantic’s Wizards Unite, a Harry Potter themed variation on Pokémon Go. Pre-registration might also allow you to be in the beta.
If you’re a former player of World of Wargasm, they’re giving free full access to any former players this weekend (March 21-24), just like a dealer, giving you a taste to get you hooked again.
How’s the campaign going? I spent just over a thousand hours on Battletech before I burnt out on it…
It’s been on hiatus for, wow, 2 weeks now. (Between work, taxes, and other obligations, I’ve only felt up to mindless stuff when I had time to play.) I want to pick it up again this weekend, because I was having fun. I had done a few payday missions that were pretty much cakewalks. Then the first scripted battle started out that way, but got a bit tense by the end (everyone survived, although it was close for one of my warriors), I made a couple tactical mistakes and an unfortunate mis-click on a charge to melee. I suppose I learned a bit from that.
In the meantime I’ve been playing American Truck Simulator; between that and Euro Truck Simulator 2, I now have over 250 hours. They’re my go-to mindless relaxation games. I got an achievement that only 0.5% of players have achieved, so that’s something.
Also broke out Space Empires IV for a bit. As a 4X, it would seem to be a thinking, decision-making game, but I’ve played it so much over the years (and SEIII before that along with other 4X’s) that I can mostly play on mental autopilot and just play to the character. My alien race is an eco-conscious collective that nearly destroyed its home planet in the past, so now they must build all the planetary condition improving facilities everywhere they go, and they’re acutely aware of the depleting resources. But they’re also an honorable species, so those treacherous Amon’krie who snubbed the gift, answered the treaty offer with battle, and encroached on our home system with their colonies…well, there’s not much left of them now.
Morrowind is free today (25th March 2019), if you have a bethesda.net account. I might get it, to go with my Xbox version, PC CD version, Steam version and GOG version.
Remember, your ability to attack is tied to your stamina. No stamina and you won’t ever hit anything.
Are we not doing phrasing anymore?
I’m doing severe stress induced dyslexia. I have enough trouble reading right now, my proof reading is basically non-existant and has been for a few months now.
Sorry; I’m not saying you made any mistakes; I’m just reading innuendo into a sentence where it was probably not intended.
Sorry to hear about your stressful situation, and the additional troubles it’s causing you.
