I don’t mind dated/retro graphics if the story is good. I do mind crap story and gameplay.
Keeping in mind that I haven’t completed them, and it’s been a long time since I’ve played…
I liked the story and progression in them, and being able to build a party from a set of choices and see them interact was fun. The writing has pretty much always been a point of high praise of the games in reviews as well. They definitely didn’t seem as unpleasant as that review of BG3 sounded.
The gameplay is faithful to D&D gameplay, with some tweaks/simplifications for the medium. It can be punishing at low levels, and takes some care for tactics.
Yeah, we’re still a long way from the true advantage of tabletop over computer which is the ability to pull WTF moments.
I have pulled a few of those back in the day when I used to play. Nothing gamebreaking or OOC, but rather true to character and not something that the GM was prepared for/had scripted. Sometimes just little beats, but things that make it a little more fun that are basically emergent properties of a collaborative story.
The idea of computer game engine reaching the level of a good GM is simultaneously fascinating (you wouldn’t need a group to play) and terrifying (no, really, I welcome our new AI overlords. It is a pleasure to serve).
They’re supposed to be quite good, if you’re sighted and not photosensitive.
Among Us is not bad.
It seems it would be a lot of fun with a group of friends, but just playing against randoms isn’t bad.
I only regret not knowing it sooner so I could have dropped this on my ex-employee who was a full on ginger:
I haven’t played it myself yet, but I’ve been watching people play Among Us on YouTube. It looks like a lot of fun!
Note that Random House, who are publishing the older novels and would publish the new ones, are uing the Internet Archive… I read 4 or 5 of the earlier novels, and had issues with their portrayal of Gully Dwarves in Autumn, but I don’t remember anything else standing out.
When did you think you’d see this from a member of Congress?
“Send her back… to Congress!”
I love it.
I’m thinking D20 Go might work better for my solo projects than Savage Worlds. However, I have run into trouble with the equipment lists, and starting wealth, where the D20 Go rules say that higher-level characters should have more wealth, but don’t say anything about how much. And the 1st campaign includes suggested characters but not their equipment. I am not sure how to create my own equipment lists and price lists. But Treadgold’s work on Byzantine military pay gives me some ideas for starting wealth.
A key (that hopefully works) for Meadow if anyone would like it - got it in a bundle but apparently already have it…
No idea if bots scrape forums like this for keys, but just in case, I’ve removed the first number (before the 3) from the key - it lieth between 6 and 8.

Yoinked. Thanks for sharing!
Based on some youtube videos, I ended up picking up BoxONE:
It’s basically a puzzle game built for a single player. Can’t say too much about it without spoilers, but it has been fun so far though there has been one part where I completely misunderstood where it was intending me to go. It’s rated for ages 14+, and hasn’t been horribly complex so far, though that’s actually been a little bit of a problem - I keep seeing things that look like they’re potentially much sneakier secrets (but aren’t) while missing the bloody obvious ones… so as usual with a puzzle game, YMMV.
The packaging and contents are very well-built and solid, and it does have hints available online in case of getting completely stuck. So far nothing’s forced me to damage anything horribly, so once I’m done with it I should be able to easily pass it on to the next person in my household.
Another one I apparently have - Kingdom: Classic:

If it is taken by the time you read this, head on over to Humble Bundle where it’s being given away
Continuing with Apollo.
Apollo 13, major rocket problems during launch lead to an early abort rather than risk an explosion.
Apollo 14. Finally! Went to the moon and returned everyone safely to the earth! Television set up, successful. Soil and rock samples, successful and returned this time. Scientific experiment package… well can’t have everything go right.
The best thing about the Switch combined with this thread is finding all these titles I had never heard of but can suddenly play.
And right now it’s safe to say that given {waves vaguely} everything (see state of the world, also the Fuck Today thread) about the only folks more stressed than me are my cadre of adventurers waiting for free treatment days because the expeditions aren’t bringing even enough home to cover the costs.
Right, my husband tends to play when he’s ginned up, and that’s a bad call. He just winds himself up more.
I play when I’m already relaxed and I want to be entertained. You have to be ready to lose.
But also, if you recruit more, you don’t have to repair everyone at once. I try not to take folks out when they’re over 3 stress. You’ll also find combinations of things will relieve stress. Herbs and Coral, for example, relieves about ~20 stress.
I play those kinds of games when I need a good distraction. At least there, failure is safe. Worst case, you start a new game.
The trick in this one, of course, is staying alive long enough to get enough deeds to expand the barracks. And getting enough characters at each level to escort the newbies.
Right now I have a hellion, graverobber, witchdoctor, nun team that the game has dubbed “The Femme Fatales” that manage to bring home massive loot, even when they can’t finish a dungeon. And their skills mesh into looking after each other. It’s almost like there’s a lesson there, or something…
