Gun Control

That’s an 80% revocation rate. Sure, it was of the applications that were marked for further review, suggesting at least some were not just smoke, but how can we be sure they really conducted a thorough search to winnow the 250,000 down to 365 in the first place?

Juat out of curiosity, I’d love to know what the criteria for flagging for “Further Review” is.

Can you get flagged for just having a non-traditional white person name?

Good question!

I will say that I have a friend who has the WASPiest name imaginable (and looks every bit of his Scottish heritage), and his (very common) name apparently is on the TSA list, which has even caused him to miss connections because of the time involved to deal with the extra scrutiny every time.

I loved this bit in the comment section:

What I’m looking forward to is the NRA encouraging its members to boycott their doctor to protest the AMA’s stand

My favourite so far (in response to London being called a “war zone” for having a slightly higher homicide rate than NYC for a two-month period):

Could you please define which war New York is currently involved in?

Dunno what’s worse – that it’s yet another mass murder, or that possibly a newspaper was targeted for being part of the “librul MSM.” Maybe it was a nut with a personal grudge . . .

The paper pre-dates the US. They published the Declaration of Independence.

The attacker had mutilated his fingers in an apparent attempt to make it harder to identify him

Fucking hell.

That sounds scary.

And with this grody detail and the unsurprising revelation that the shooter is white, I’m leaning right-wingnut who planned this for a while and will ultimately be revealed to be part of the white supremecist cabal.

Simultaneously managing to be a lone wolf. /s

More seriously, even though he has been upset at the paper for a while, the zeitgeist right now almost guaranteed something was going to happen. The president has declared the press to be public enemy number one. One of the darling boys of the alt-reich said he can’t wait for people to start shooting reporters.

He’s had this grudge for years and stayed at the level of threats. Suddenly, he decides it’s time to pick up his gun and take action. Could it possibly be because the man he most likely voted for told him it was a good idea? Implied he’d be a hero? Validated all his violent feelings towards these people?

Stochastic terrorism is the future of terror. It doesn’t need organised cells that can be tracked, doesn’t need complicated plans. None of these lone wolves are acting alone.

And I refuse to swallow any official line that 100% swears they are.

Somehow everyone to the left of the Klan-backed 1924 Immigration Act has a hive mind, and we’re all responsible for what anyone may say or do, but everyone to the right is a lone wolf, completely independent even when they work with each other.

Can we link this shooting to Vidya?

Sure because having a gun magically makes it so that you can see in the dark, and it will also just automatically appear in your hands at the very moment you need it.

And, because two people in a confrontation with guns is of course always less dangerous than one, and the police are of course always rational if one of their own is threatened (or shot) while they’re in the wrong.

Just… so, so, SO many things wrong with the statement, that it’s rather impressive.
