Gun Control

Sure. [sighs] Why not.

We probably ought to think of something, or else the current batch of oligarchs will force the children with less money to stand in front and act as human shields for those with more money.

Someone should write a Modest Proposal-style satire about exactly that.

Now hold it right there. At least give the free-market approach a chance first. The more prestigious charter schools could offer incentives ā€” maybe free cafeteria lunches, a straight cash payment or reduced tuition ā€” for any students who volunteer for training in human-wave attacks to distract a gunman and allow their classmates to escape. Possibly some form of post-hypnotic suggestion could be employed to ensure that the volunteers discharge their duties when called upon.

Since the great majority of these front-rank students (as I propose we call them) would never actually experience a school shooting, the odds would be ever in their favour. This would have to be seen as a great opportunity for those otherwise unable to afford a top-notch education.

A version of this, then:

Not at all. Thatā€™s horrible. The front-rank students in my proposal would have far better odds of surviving to adulthood*, as well as greater benefits in the form of high-quality education and invaluable contacts with children of a higher social class.

*Based on current projections of the rate of increase in the lethality of small arms.

How long do you think before the cries start that this is a false-flag shooting by a pro-gun-control liberal, trying to discredit the ā€œarm the teachersā€ idea?

That drilled a student? Thatā€™s hard-core!

From the article:

ā€¦the incident occurred during the administration of justice classā€¦

Police said he was ā€œproviding instruction related to public safety.ā€

The father told KSBW that the teacher was preparing to use the gun to show how to disarm someone.

Call me naive, but I would have thought that an ā€œadministration of justiceā€ class would be concerned with things like the structure of the court system, the legal rights of the individual, and so on. Apparently it really means police combat training.

But setting that aside for the moment, if one is demonstrating how to disarm someone is it really necessary to use a real, live, shoots-bullets firearm as opposed to, say, a replica pistol or a pointed stick?

How about a banana?

And if he insists on using a real firearm, what asshole fiddles with it in front of kids without checking whether itā€™s loaded or not??

Apparently, thatā€™s what he says he was doing - checking if it was loaded.

The father said the teacher told the class before pointing the gun at the ceiling that he was doing so to make sure his gun wasnā€™t loaded, something that can be determined visually.

Apparently, releasing the magazine and pulling back the slide wasnā€™t an option, for some reason.

I couldnā€™t decide whether to post that here or in the ā€œSchadenfreude Pieā€ topic. And I had something else for there, soā€¦

You may be right. Already the scare quotes are appearing, note the updated headline from the same source:

Wasnā€™t there a Pogo cartoon about that? The only thing more dangerous than a loaded gun is an ā€œunloadedā€ gun?
