Our friends way up in the Smokies are freaking out. The heat & humidity has been worse up there than when they lived in Florida!

It’s getting ridiculous.

It’s cloudy and cooler than usual in the Philly area. Hurricane Erin is approaching (and hopefully staying far offshore::crossed_fingers:t5:). Since we’ve had a lot of stories about sudden downpours and resulting disasters this summer, this story on cloudbursts caught my attention:

The beginning of the report below discusses what happened in some Texas campgrounds during the recent flash flooding disaster, as well as the roles government, developers, and campground owners played in it:

It reminded me of reports after Hurricane Katrina that Gulf Coast casinos pushed for flood zoning / map changes to avoid paying higher insurance rates. They are more concerned about profits than people. So, residents and tourists concerned about safety need to do their homework, find their own disaster alerts, and plan for emergencies.

Hope everyone stays safe - and dry!

Nearly a month of rain in 2 days, most of it deposited in 1 - 2 hour bursts. Average rain for my area is 4.5 inch/month and we’re at just shy of 4 inches.

Everything is a bit damp right now.

Maybe don’t sleep on Erin quite yet.

Also:

Hurricane scientists generally agree that although the overall number of tropical storms and hurricanes may not increase in a warmer world, such background conditions are likely to produce more intense storms like Erin.

even though Erin is north and east of us right now, east of the Bahamas, we are currently getting some of the really widespread thunderstorm from the furthest bands. it’s kind of odd, these storms seem to be coming from the west, but are the outer bands swirling back toward the center.
it’s a big storm!
unless it stalls out, it should be well north and east of us by Friday and Saturday to make for smooth sailing for tuna fishing. glad we opted for later in the week, or we’d be disappointed (and very wet).
still - all y’all upcoast be careful! lots of rain and heavy surf and riptides are coming your way!

Good luck on the tuna fishing and stay safe out in the blue!

thanks, man.
late August, into September is the worst time to plan open water trips. it is the height of our hurricane season.
it is also mum’s birthday this weekend and she loves fishing. we’re doing two days out on the Islamorada Humps - deep water to the south and east of the barrier reef.
should be good, but weather is fickle, que, no?

It feels like autumn here. I’m out of bed before the sun rises. I’m taking warm showers again.

It sounds great, but

the humidity is still making the air feel like soup.

The rain started at 9:00 this morning.
It will end around 4:00 tomorrow morning.

Update: 6:00 am, still raining.

Yesterday, the rain was moving from southwest to northeast.
Now it has reversed, going from northeast to southwest due to the influence of Hurricane Erin.

The girlfriend I met while we were still in utero lives near the Outer Banks in NC.

How is the hurricane looking down there?

I like watching the windstream on the weather map from wunderground sometimes. I find it relaxing. I’d never looked at it during a hurricane, though. Definitely not relaxing.

You should see it animated for the full, terrifying effect. Just click on windstream on the right-hand menu.

Yes. Looks like the atmosphere is being sucked down a drain. Where is it going?!

I think it returns to every room where someone tried to say something funny, was greeted with silence and then walked out in shame. Basically all of the parties I tried to attend in high school.

Wow. That is very spinny. Interesting how it seems to be sucking air down through Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas and then across the Gulf of Mexico, over Florida and into her maw.

Glad Erin isn’t predicted to land anywhere

Last I’d heard, it didn’t sound great.

Then I saw @OhHai 's post below yours. spyglass 1

According to MarineTraffic, this is the Island Princess. It’s been parked here for a few days, which is unusual. I think it’s waiting for the hurricane to pass.
