How's the Weather?

Well, there’s wind, but also atmospheric pressure. When we’re talking about hundreds of thousands of cubic kilometers of volume, the kind of pressure differences between the outside of a hurricane and the eye account for an incredible amount of air mass.

That stuff does go off relatively quickly, unlike the full fat version, so I wouldn’t leave it hanging about after being heated like that!

Now according to MarineTraffic, the Island Princess departed this morning at 9:00. Destination: Bermuda.

So I guess the hurricane is far enough north to allow for that.

This pisses me off so much. They chose to live along a creek on a known flood plain. They choose to live in a neighborhood with only one entrance that is a bridge across a large creek known for flash flooding. They didn’t have to live there. Plenty of housing nearby that isn’t along a flood prone creek in a neighborhood with a single entrance across that creek. They chose to live here:

So when it does flood and the single bridge is damaged, the people are stuck. No cars across the bridge. County scrambling to get necessary supplies staged, rescue personnel and volunteers carting supplies across the bridge on foot. Major city businesses donating thousands in relief supplies. County doing everything to assess safety of bridge and get a temporary pontoon bridge. Ambulance staged at the bridge 24/7 in case of a medical emergency.

But no. The county didn’t do enough! They didn’t respond fast enough! Nevermind there are other areas that needed help too. Nevermind that a lot of firefighters and rescue personnel went to help find the hundred plus children lost in Kerr County. Nevermind that they didn’t have anyone missing or dead to search for.

Now the county is considering raising property taxes to repair all the damage. And they are complaining again. How dare the county raise property taxes! Flood insurance is expensive already!

Completely ignoring that they can claim an exemption because they chose to live in a flood plain on a creek well known for flooding and lost their homes. It will be every one else in the county who gets the pay the extra property taxes. Which, btw, would be about $200 a year for the average home owner. And if they didn’t chose to live there, they wouldn’t be required to have flood insurance.

There are places where people can’t help but live on a flood plain. There either isn’t enough housing on higher ground or there isn’t enough affordable housing. But this is not that situation.

Soon!

It hasn’t gotten over 70 since Saturday here, so weird after the prolonged heat.

Weird, but awesome. The weather has been just about perfect up here (for me, at least…highs in the mid-upper 60s, nice and cool at night). So happy to see some fall colors already!

The time of year when I’m not engaged in battle with my lawn every weekend…I can almost smell it. It smells like books and blankets. And wool socks. Oh yes, warm wool socks.

High of 86° F tomorrow. I’m excited. It’s been over a month since we dipped below a high of 90

We’ve been dipping down into the 70s and 80s here in GA the past 2 weeks? It’s been so nice…

It’s been nice lately up here too. It’s actually been downright cool the last couple days, I had to close the windows and turn on the heat! It’s gonna warm up again next week though.

Late summer pop-up thunderstorms going north of me, going south of me. My yard is so dry, needs rain badly

Weather related:

Today I have heard cicadas for the first time this year. That seems later than usual.

I took the A/C unit out of my kitchen window today. And I’m so happy! I only needed to use the A/C a handful of times over the summer. But all the rest of the time I couldn’t open the window. Now there’s fresh air and a slight breeze coming into the kitchen :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

(That’s not to say that I didn’t appreciate the A/C when it was truly hot out. On a couple of nights, it felt almost lifesaving. Just wished there was a second window that could be opened the rest of the time  )

weather in the Conch Islands is to be expected - hot, humid days, puncuated by intermittent thunderstorms (summer squalls), yet, thankfully, the tropical cyclonic activity we usuallly warily watch is quiet.

daily ambient temps are around 30C/86F with humidity making for “feels like” temps up to 40C/104F. this is not unusal at all. what totally sucks about it right now is our AC went TU sometime Saturday AM! repairman says parts on Tuesday.

so we are spending all our time in the small, but air-conditioned workshop and spending three nights in sweat lodge conditions. i can just feel those toxins and pounds just melting away!

no, really, it sucks. who in their right mind ever thought to settle in the florida keys for quality of life?!
