ETA:
New Lil Nas X video for his song Paniniā¦ with an animated version featuring Chowder:
Catchy song, too!
That was fun.
Rest In Peace.
I love these OG MTV videos that all seemed like the band had a friend who shot these for them in his garage.
I agree. A rough-hewn creativity. I especially like the use of back projection in this one.
Me too. All the old videos had these kind of cheap but interesting effects in them. I think these focus more in the music than the overproduced mini-movies that became popular after Thriller hit.
The concept videos are also more forgiving of performers who might have great musical performance presence but who know theyāre not actors as such.
The Cars were very wide about that in their videos, in that they let stuff happen around them, rather than being the cause of it. Like in the āMagicā video, where Ocasek stands on a clear plastic table in a swimming pool while everyone else goes nuts around him, or āYou Might Thinkā where is mostly actors and animations.
Having recently seen Bugsy Malone, in which Jodie Foster mimes along to an adult singer, and the original Freaky Friday, where Foster allegedly sings the theme song along with co-lead Barbara Harris (itās definitely not Jodie), I became curious to hear what she really sounded like.
Here ātis, from 1977 French flick Moi, fleur bleue aka Stop Calling Me Baby! There are more numbers out there actually, but I figure one will do.
Itās āIn Bloomāā¦ I just now realized this (obviously other people did as well)
Now thatās what I call āwild.ā
Oh, Iām sure it isnāt accidental. I donāt speak the language at all, but everything looked like they were setting up to guy some (very historical) region or another.
My lack of Japanese means that there is a whole dimension Iām missing, as it seems that deliberately playing up dialect is a thing in Japanese Rock. I gather, for instance, that Ningen Isu sings entirely in Tsugaru dialect from Aomori Prefecture. Iām guessing that this would be roughly equivalent to singing in really thick Geordie.
Snoop dog covering Nick Caveā¦
Not all things are terribleā¦ sometimes we get gems like this.
Pity things werenāt crossing the iron curtain too often back then. Some Mahavishnu influence, some Miles influence.
This is proving to be a helluva band.
