A liberal friend was arguing with her right wing cousin who said “that’s just your education talking.”

Really, the Mary Shelley? I mean, it’s a good way to put that, but…

France’s “left” and “right” labels filtered out to the rest of the world during the 1800s, but they weren’t common in English-speaking countries until the early 20th century.

I think it is fake, but Left Wing comes from the French Revolution, as it was where the republicans sat while the monarchists sat on the right.

Also, Mary Shelley’s father was an early anarchist.

“No politics” rewards conservative ideologies. Anything left wing or progressive is seen as ‘political’ because it goes against the status quo, whereas the invisible politics of the status quo is taken for granted as a state of nature. Only conservatives can speak freely in that environment

Some of the folks that decide to be uninvolved in politics is probably due to Learned Helplessness. Either simply as a consequence of just living their life and being beaten down that they coincidentally adopt this attitude to cope, or if you look at the actions and policies adopted by right wing folks: American society has been nudged subtly and sometimes quite overtly to induce Learned Helplessness on purpose to their political opponents.

Happy Birthday, Freddie E.

The bourgeoisie … lets him have the appearance of acting from a free choice, of making a contract with free, unconstrained consent, as a responsible agent who has attained his majority. Fine freedom, where the proletarian has no other choice than that of either accepting the conditions which the bourgeoisie offers him, or of starving, of freezing to death, of sleeping naked among the beasts of the forests!
