LA ICE Protest Topic

I’m going to keep beating this drum until it gets done: the US needs to have criminal penalties for violations of people’s constitutional rights. If there are no consequences for the person violating those rights, then we don’t really have them.

Let’s not forget that round ups in LA by ICE are still happening…

Yep, one of the city officials said that he’s positive that they were filming a TikTok propaganda video for Noem & ICE. He basically called them out for not going through the filming permit process that we have in place in Los Angeles County.

What’s interesting about the park operation is that it very much doesn’t seem to have been even intended to be a round up. It seems like they leaked their plans to be there at that time (certainly people got enough advance notice, somehow, to print up fliers to warn people to stay away that day), came with overwhelming force (the military vehicles, unlike the usual unmarked vans; the line of horses; a sniper on the roof of one vehicle) and their own press, in the hopes that they could film some propaganda without anyone being there. The people they did come across, they pointed guns at and demanded they leave. (I’d be interested to know what would have happened if there had been push-back, what legal authority ICE would have asserted, when clearly they had none at all to make those overtly unconstitutional demands.) No one was detained or arrested - it seems like it was done purely to intimidate, to assert their power, unchallenged.

Now we’ve got Fox/DHS floating the idea of arresting Bass for daring to ask them to cease their illegal behavior…

We went to a mall in Orange County yesterday to go to the Lego store to get my niece a gift and it was nearly empty at 11 am on a Saturday. Just to note that this is a really upscale mall (YSL, Tiffany’s, Dior, etc.) and it typically caters to rich foreign tour groups (typically from Asian and Arab nations). It seems that nobody is traveling to Southern California.

Yeah, I’m not surprised. They are just… grabbing people, sometimes violently, at random. Who would want to visit when that’s happening…

I wonder if the World Cup next year is going to be a complete disaster because of this. I can’t imagine fans from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, or, hell, even Germany and Italy wanting to risk coming here right now.

If these are still ongoing, it’s likely… Here in ATL, we’re moving out homeless encampments from around downtown… This has been a much longer project, but this is more sustained, and at least there seems to be some effort to house people as they clear the camps… I didn’t get a chance to hear this on the air, but they discuss this ongoing project on a local news program

I do know that there have been some ICE raids/round ups, but not near the city center. The one I heard about was up on Buford HWY, which is a stretch of highway NE of the city that is known for being a heavily immigrant area… I’m surprised I’ve not heard about anything going on over in Clarkston, though, which has a refugee center and is one of the most diverse areas on the country. The campus I teach on usually is there, and my classes are always very diverse… I know some people have been arrested in my county, too, which is also pretty diverse.
