Read Lundy Bankcroft’s work on abuse. It is very useful.

I’ve read one of his books – Why Does He Do That. I liked how it emphasised these “outbursts” are actually very planned and controlled. Made me realise some of the behaviours I’d observed really were what I thought they were, however counterintuitive that seemed at the time.

Yep. It’s a very eye opening book.

Now for some good news for us ladies, this Hidden Figure has been revealed.

Okay, I’m gonna be 54 in November of this year; in “Sunset Boulevard” released in 1950, 14 years prior to my birth, has the main character of Norma Desmond being 50 years of age. Sheezus pleezus, that’s just wrong! We have gotten a bit of a ways, haven’t we, sort of?

But she’s scary as all fuck…and thinking of other females created by Billy Wilder, was he a misogynist or what?

I don’t think it was just her age. She was also a major whacko, like Miss Havisham, whom Dickens wrote as in her mid-fifties.

So don’t worry. 54 is the new 49.

No - look at the women in “Marty”, released five years later:

It was the societal expectation of women 50 and over - cultural too, across most cultures, to look like they were old. Menopause allegedly meant then (and still does to some now) that a woman was dried up and should look so. Especially if she was a widow (can’t disgrace dead hubby’s memory).

I won’t started on “Some Like It Hot”. At least not now.

I won’t go through the grey hair on men being “distinguished” and on women it’s “drab”.

I’m lucky. I got good genes, and I quit drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes (those two things take years off of one’s life and add them to one’s appearance, I’m convinced). And yes, today it’s not as bad as it was then. But …would anyone care if, say, the POTUS’s alleged porn-star-mistress was an older porn star? Or one who didn’t look all glam and young? I mean, the way HE looks…blech.

The star of “The Devil in Miss Jones”.

Do you remember the commentary around Barbara Bush?
Cuz she looked too old, people made comments about her being Bush Srs Mom and not his wife. When really, they both looked the age they were.

Remember, Hilary was too old to be President. She also had too much vagina. Ain’t nothing worse than old vagina apparently.

Yep whats needed is a president who can just grab hold and take control.

Right, because then it looks like they are doing something Never mind that the people this “helped” didn’t want it.

As an aside, Ernest Borgnine was excellent in “Marty”. People really underestimated his acting skills because he wasn’t conventionally handsome.

Interestingly, your Smithsonian link specifically states that Sheila Minor has since remarried and does not wish her new surname to be publicized, so they did not list it, but the CNN link did list her by that name. It could be the difference between actually interviewing her, and thus getting the request, versus records research without personally reaching out to her. Or, it could be the difference between respecting someone’s request and not.

His audition was the scene with his mother, and everyone was crying, I believe, when he was done.

And in “R.E.D.” his last screen role, he was MAGnificent for such a small part. When I was a kid, I loved him in “McHale’s Navy”; I didn’t think he was ugly because he had big brown eyes and seemed to be smiling or laughing nearly all the time!
