Last summer I was walking home from the streetcar stop. It was not late – maybe 10pm – but late enough it was dark out.
This black jeep went by me with its windows down, and I could hear the people inside talking – they seemed familiar with each other. Then the woman said, “you’re going the wrong way” and then, as the jeep headed away from me, I heard her calling for help.
I did try to see the licence plate, but it was already too far away from me.
It’s been bothering me ever since. Now I’m really wondering.

Jesus…
It could just be people fooling around?

And that’s just it! Like, it’s so hard to judge – were they just being goofs, or was she calling for help while trying not to make a scene at the same time? The jeep did stop at a red light – assuming she didn’t have mobility issues, she could have got out then. But that’s not to say she was too scared/drunk/whatever to not think of that.
I just really don’t know what happened.

But… But…but… Uber is perfectly safe and wonderful, and why wouldn’t women feel safe getting into a strange, unmarked car? /s
Sorry, flashbacks to an earlier conversation. I know your friend was probably saved by the real Uber driver, but the fact remains that the system is too easy for bad actors to exploit.

TBF my friends and I had more run-ins with actual taxi drivers than I’ve heard of with uber drivers… so I guess we’re just back to ban-all-men? Women for everything, including drivers!

More from the CBC on the case. This is starting to remind me of the famous Jane Doe case from the 80s. I’ll have to watch our for Doe making a statement.
I’m so fucking glad her Mom found her and embarrassed the fuck out of the police so publically they are being forced to actually do something! Because if you go missing in the village they just assume you’re a sex worker, and that means no investigation, because they do no care. Honestly, I will never forgive any of them for “NHI”. Yadda yadda “#notallcops” fuck that, yes all cops!

Just reading that article gave me flashbacks to Picton: cops were told there was a serial killer but because the victims were sex workers and mostly Native, they ignored it. As an institution, cops are not who they pretend to be.

Yup. They knew, for ages they knew, they didn’t fucking care. Because the victims were supposedly junkies, prostitutes, and native. Because NHI. Fuckers all.

Sorry, what’s NHI please?

Cop slang, the used it in the Picton case. NHI = No Humans Involved.
Its disgusting.

I can’t blame just the BC police, it appears that every police department has a similar code, if not the exact same one.
NHI – No Humans Involved, Margot L. Butler observes that the project derived its name from an acronym used by San Diego police to refer to “‘misdemeanour murders’ of biker women and hookers” (2006: 156)

Its December 6th.
A day of remembrance in Canada.
I’m going to cross post this to the Feminism thread, because this is why we’ll never shut up.

It’s a good issue to cover, but I found the reporting just weird. They throw away a standard line about the “have” and “have-not” provinces, but their profile example is about an Alberta man denied coverage and a Saskatchewan man receiving it. Last time I checked, Alberta was still mining the tar sands for all they’re worth and Saskatchewan was struggling with unemployment.

Also Alberta is WEIRD about medical coverage.
You have to pay directly for it, its not bundled with your income tax like in ON. So, when I moved there, I had no idea I had to register and PAY for my health care. Until they sent a notice to my work to start garnishing my wages! And then HR was like “we pay these for you, you just need to tell us!” but then I have to pay tax on that amount because it becomes a taxable benefit. So, as I said, fucking weird!
I think this is less like a have and have-not issue, and more an “Alberta is fucking weird” issue.

Totally agree. Also, I felt bad that the Alberta guy couldn’t just move to Saskatchewan for the three months to get the coverage. Probably would be cheaper than the 50 grand, even if he had to quit his job and then find a new one.

My riding has a Liberal MP for the first time ever thanks to one by-election of four held today. The last time a Liberal MP was elected in any part of the now current riding was in 1949, when William Mott’s riding was from Delta to Langley.

Did you know that since the Westminster Act of 1931, Canada has declared war only once?
Canada declared war on Japan on December 7, 1941.
That other country, the victim of an aerial attack on the Hawaii port of Pearl Harbor, declared war a day later.
