I don’t disagree with that article, but it’s about two years overdue. The black/socialist left has been shouting about exactly that from the day Trump won the primary.
Not really, you could argue that “the crimes are the crimes, full stop” is a norm. But as long as society is going to shrug and say SSDD, then it doesn’t matter that he’s breaking the law, because society is willing to shrug it off. Other countries, the norm is that the laws do not apply to the leader. In still other countries, not only does the law apply, but also expectations of no preferential treatment at the grocery store.
He’s right in that norms are a shifting thing in society, but he hasn’t quite examined his own assumptions to see how much his statement is tied up in norms.
It’s not that long ago, historically speaking, that “the law is the law, regardless of status” was radical, revolutionary thought.
Yes, there is a difference between “this is not normal” and “this is wrong”, but norms are what determine why it’s wrong.
This admin isn’t just trying to loot and run (which is wrong) but trying to convince us that this is how everybody does things. Ask anyone who’s been abused: you can (and do) put up with a lot of very wrong things, because you think “that’s just how it is”. People get out when someone finally convinces them that, “no, honey, it’s not.”
