Random Silly Grins

It’s funny how childhood events like that stay with you. I think I avoided saying “Mackinac” at all after that.

For clarity, that event occurred here. The Milwaukee area, as you said.

I avoided saying it when I was in Milwaukee, too. And hearing the -ACK at the end makes me cringe a bit. Of course, so does “sauna” with the first syllable “saw” instead of “sow” (rhyming with cow). But I’ll say it the wrong way outside of the U.P. to save myself from having to have a conversation about it.

Wait, so your telling me another town is pronounced like “Saginack”?

On a visit to Boston, I noticed a parking meter with a paper sack over it upon which was written: “Broken.”

A skeptical parking officer removed the bag, inserted a quarter in the meter and turned the dial. It worked perfectly. As the officer began to write a parking ticket, the car’s owner rushed out of a nearby building.

“What are you doing?” he yelled after a quick glance at the meter, “There’s plenty of time left!”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the article of clothing is always pronounced, and spelled, “mackinaw”.

“He kissed me when we parted
So hard that he broke my jaw
I could not speak to tell him
He forgot his mackinaw”.

Yep, looks like the jacket (and cloth) is spelled with a “w”. Nice song!

It’s a shame some doctors don’t keep up with the latest medical advances.

Ghost pepper, not habanero. Pepper X if you can find it. It’s got X in the name, it’s gotta be good.

I think there’s a typo too, not 2-3 but 20-30, yeah, that sounds much more effective.

Depends on the vaccine. For the flu, 2-3 Ghost Pepper is enough. For the covid, you need 10 doses, spaced out 12 hours, to flush the DNA retroviral out of the organism.

Invermectin optional.

Cayenne pepper works well too. No chopping needed.

Some mild discomfort is normal, but if pain persists that means the vaccine is embedded more deeply than usual in the cells of your intestinal lining. You may have received an mRNA vaccine by mistake or as part of a secret experiment.

In that case, repeat the treatment the next day, with a booster in seven days’ time.

And whatever you do, DON’T tell your doctor about it, unless you trust him not to be from the vaccine cabal!

I don’t want to be tracked but I like cookies :frowning:

I mean, unless I’m greatly mistaken, this is a French place name that we actually pronounce the French spelling correctly, with the maddening French convention of spelling it with a consonant on the end that is never pronounced. Mackinac = “mack-ih-naaaah”.

whereas Detroit has been anglicized/americanized to “duh-TRIOT” or “DEE-troit” instead of the french “day-TWA”

it’s just a crap shoot how the combination of spelling and pronunciation gets passed down over the centuries.

Yep, t’s an Ojibwe place name with a French spelling:

And yet the region of Tadoussac in Quebec and the go-to Quebecois swear word “tabernac” pronounce the final consonant. :person_shrugging:

At least it’s not English spelling.
