I remember my first day of organic chemistry, the professor played Tom Lehrer’s “The Elements” song, “sung to a possibly recognizable tune.” Supposedly by the end of the course, we were going to be able to rattle them off likewise.¹ As much as I admire Lehrer, I think Randy’s version of the Major General song is even more clever.

¹Of course O-chem mostly involves carbon plus a few others; tantalum, technetium, titanium, tellurium, for example were rarely if ever mentioned. I think it was a joke.

I once tried to roast peanuts for the first time in an oven. I went to check on them and they were all on fire. I calmly shut the door and searched for baking soda when the fire alarm went off. My wife was on the phone with her sister at the time. Sister: “What’s that noise?” Wife: “Oh, just roasting peanuts.”
