Squizzles!

Gorgeous day yesterday so I took the hose off the hanger to rinse some things off.

It’s been hanging there since last fall.

As I unrolled it several almonds fell out. The dang squirrels have been hiding them in the hose.

I tried going baby squirrel spelunking with my endoscope/home colonoscopy camera.

I’ve done it before to check and see what’s going on in the houses. If there is a squirrel in there they run out when the camera comes in.

This time the squirrel lunged at the camera and squaked at me.

My best guess is there are babies in there.

This is a few days ago when it wasn’t so protective.

We saw mamma, we now know it’s a mamma because she’s packin’ milk.

So, stay tuned for babies poking their heads out in a few weeks.

Oh, I hate being squaked at!

Seriously though, that’s a lovely story.
I hope you manage to get pics or video.

I’d probably throw a fuss if a stranger came at me with an endoscope, too.

“Hold it right there, mister!”

Squizzle-Adjacent Story:

So, yesterday morning I left Dad at the kitchen table, he was busy with the nutcracker - finally getting around to the Xmas walnuts and brazils. He looked like he was having fun so I left him to it and went into town to shop/walk doglet etc.

When I got back in the afternoon, he was ensconced in front of the box, and I took the carrier-bag full of shells that I found on the kitchen floor to the green bin. So far so good.

Until this morning:

Dad: “Where’s that bag of nuts I left here?”
Me: “You mean the bag of empty shells? The ones I chucked out last night?”
Dad: “Oh, Bollocks!”

It turns out that he’d actually spent half the day shelling these nuts for the squirrels as he wasn’t going to eat the bloody things himself.

He has forgiven me, and seen the funny side.
Unlike the dog, who has the hump with me because I wasted all that squirrel-bait.

This is how our evening went.

I looked at the squirrel house and mamma was just looking over the edge. I thought she was just looking at the birds that were under the tree.

Nope, birds flew away and she was just staring.

I went outside to find one of our backyard squirrels in a bad way. Based on the blood trail we figured he fell out of the tree, but he also had a wound so maybe he was investigating and mamma was being a good mamma.

We put him in a heated box, he was really shivering and not moving.

We made some calls to the rescue network and got a recommendation to a wonderful woman in Fashionable Ferndale, MI.

It was a bit of a drive, by the time we got there Mr. Squizzle had curled up, was dry and fluffy but was still bleeding.

The rehab lady sent us this message already so hopefully it goes well.

When he recovers we can bring him home to release.

There is at least one wound from what I could see but mobility looks good so that’s a positive sign. I started antibiotics. Finger crossed

She sat there watching us the whole time, hopefully she gets her friend back soon.

Dude. Your kindness is inspiring. I hope little squirrel pulls through.

That’s nice of you to say but I suspect all of us would do anything for the little critters we love so much.
