That’s some fine doggerel, my fellow squizzle enthusiasts!
The new babies are here, the new babies are here!
Whenever baby tried to investigate momma pulled it back in.
… a nutty nook, built for two.
Congrats!
Methinks U’ll be needing some or all of these, so thought I’d provide:
Just look at those banana flavored Gold Dragon ones!
Wouldn’t want the Kittehs to feel left out, so here are some catnip cigars from the wonderful world of Yeowww! Catnip:
{whomst also make divine catnip bananas!
My wife got me up early, she was crying.
Last night a racoon got in the squirrel house, it’s all on video, it’s not plessant.
But, momma fought off the racoon for several minutes, at one point momma got out of the house and tries getting the racoon to attack her.
The racoon only got one baby but the racoon tossed the rest all out onto the ground and our deck.
Momma spent a couple hours looking for and gathering up all the babies. She moved them into the second house in the same tree. She’s now rebuilding the nest.
The little guy on the tree was the last one to find, we were watching her, it was frustrating until she finally saw it and took it home.
It’s extremely windy right now so scents were probably a little hard to pick up.
We saw her move 4. The last one she first dragged by it’s tail and then scuffed it up to the house and shoved it in.
The house on the left is where she moved them.
We had some straw left over from feral cat houses so I put some out there thinking she could use some new building materials.
Momma watched me, she came down as soon as I went in and grabbed a mouthful.
Momma squirrel work is never done.
Smart girl
What a horrible episode!
I hope the tossed ones all survive.
Reminds me of how high squirrel nests usually are.
Hope they’ll all be OK!!!
I took some time and rewatched the video on a large screen.
I was wrong, the racoon didn’t throw the babies out, they all jumped out. I counted 7 jump from the tree.
Two landed on our upstairs balcony.
This video is pretty impressive, 7 hours later she was still rounding them up. Look in the bottom right corner as the video starts, you can see baby making mama very nervous. Then keep your eye on the house, she also had to keep that baby from coming out. She has her hands full.
I also noticed she put some babies in the original house and then moved them later.
This was six hours later, we have no idea how this baby got this high in the tree because none of them went in that direction, it’s at the bottom of the screen.
We can’t account for 3 babies but the cameras can’t see every angle.
Mama is building a nest in another tree, she was carrying giant sticks way up high but she’s also adding bedding to the current house.
Mr. Racoon visited last night but it looked in the wrong house. My neighbors think my wife is bonkers shooing away a racoon at 1 am.
I slept with my tablet and 3 cameras watching the house, my wife layed on the couch watching the tree all night.
Babies were scurrying around the tree today, I saw 4 different ones.
These are two different ones.
You two are so sweet to try and help Mama squirrel defend her babbies!
Do you think there’s any way to raccoon-proof the squirrel house now occupied? Raccoons (based on my one-time up-close observation in the wild years ago) are substantially larger than your squirrels. Could the house entrance be reduced to only allow the squirrels entrance but keep out raccoons?
Put some chicken wire around to keep the racoons away from the nests. We had a racoon who attacked a gourd birdhouse and we made a chicken wire shroud to keep him away. They also were pooping on a portion of our deck and chicken wire placed there keeps them away.
@hecep The hole was originally only 3 inches, the silly squirrels chew on it.
@FSogol I have a new one built and ready to go as soon as they vacate, I’m going to modify it like this or just reengineer the whole thing.
My wren houses have a metal plate to keep predators from chewing the hole bigger.
Perhaps you could find a larger version for your squirrel house opening?
May I just say how wonderful this is, working together to figure out how to ensure the safety of @tcg550 's squirrels and their squirrlets?
OMG! Behbeh squazoozles! Behbeh squuzzles! Squorrerer…
Squoozle behbehs!
