Squirrels are worried too!

Babies are in trouble.

They’re eating the new flowers, there were at least 7 or 8 daisies yesterday afternoon.

My mom always planted marigolds around the garden to keep critters away, but I think our cats had more to do with a somewhat squirrel and bun free yard.

Several years ago we had our ginormous silver maple trimmed and thinned out.

There used to be a huge branch over our garage that was like a squirrel highway to our garage to the neighbor’s garage and then to their tree.

The day after the tree trimming a squirrel ran across our garage and then realized the branch was gone.

I installed a squirrel bridge.

Some squirrel run across the top, some squirrels hang underneath and go paw over paw.

The babies have been investigating but so far they haven’t crossed it.

And here’s a squizzle bunny crossover picture. That’s one of the babies.

No wonder the bunny is eating their nuts, baby is eating bunny’s lettuce.

There’s a set of public bathrooms on a jobsite we work at almost daily.

On either side of the entrance are two 4’ x 8’ landscaped areas. They’re basically bordered with some low boxwood shrubs, mulch, and some green plants.

The rest of the property is acres of asphalt surrounded by canals and a giant lake.

Those two spots attract a lot of animals but you have to really look.

We’ve also been leaving food for a few years for a couple feral cats.

Today we almost missed this little squizzle.

An adult squirrel popped in and checked on the little one as we were leaving.

As we were leaving for work this morning the neighbor’s 6 year old boy was riding his bike, he yelled stop so he could show us something.

One of the neighborhood squirrels fell from a power line and died.

I got some gloves and a bag and gathered him up.

When we came home the little boy asked if we did something with the squirrel.

Yes, we buried him. He wasn’t happy because he wanted to hit it with a stick. Not my kid so I just explained it was the respectful right thing to do and he rode off.

Squirrel is in our pet cemetery.

But the babies help us get our mind off of it.

There were 7 of us in the yard celebrating our daughter’s birthday yesterday. The babies stayed in the tree for the most part but eventually they got curious. There were two tables filled with food from ribs and corn to fruit salads vegetables and cake. They ignored it all and just ran around as if we weren’t there.

Is it just me, or do those babbies – like “Peanuts” characters – have disproportionately large heads?

Perhaps the foreshortening in the third photo suggests a big head?

But then there’s the Caracal.

I suspect they’ll grow into it.

They’re getting big very fast, pretty soon they’ll be hard to tell apart from the adults running around.

Oh sure, people like Peanuts young’ns grow into their big heads and eyes too. I just wondered if young squirrels have the same bodily growth pattern in that sense.

We’ve had several batches of babies over the years but they always left the tree and our yard very early on.

This is the first batch that is sticking around so we’re learning a lot about baby squirrels.

We’ll soon see how they develop.

Getting out of bed in the morning and looking outside sure makes the day start out so much better.

Oops, that was a reply to @Millie_Fink

Crunchy, not smooth!

We had a friend just chilling on the wall the other day. Usually when I see squirrels they’re just so busy…

I’m surprised when I see them like that that they’re not more nervous about hawks.

I saw some very busy ones while sitting in a park today. A dozen or so were climbing out to the very ends of branches, then doing something amidst the leaves, often while hanging upside down as the branches bent. I thought they might have been eating fresh leaves, but decided that young buds were the more likely target. Never seen that before.
